Summer Update
A Message from the District 7/19/21
Dear District 204 Families and Staff,
At tonight’s Board of Education meeting, I shared more information about our fall opening plans. We expanded on the information that was shared at the June 14 meeting and provided more details about our expectations about masks wearing.
As we have done since the onset of the pandemic, we have used guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as requirements from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in making our decisions. The CDC came out with new guidance on June 8 and ISBE and IDPH echoed that guidance.
The new guidance provides more flexibility for school districts and stressed the need for there to be layers of protection in schools against the COVID19 virus. Though the CDC continues to recommend masking and social distancing, the CDC also says, “if school administrators decide to remove any of the prevention strategies for their school based on local conditions, they should remove them one at a time and monitor closely for any increases in COVID-19 cases.” We currently have multiple layers of prevention in place in our schools and feel that because of the current community levels of positivity being extremely low and those prevention layers are in place, we can now recommend that masks be worn by those who are not vaccinated.
Our goal is to start the school year in as much of a pre-pandemic way as possible with normal daily schedules in place in our schools and with a focus on in-person learning. Because the pandemic is not over, we will need to continue to monitor the community positivity levels and quarantine cases in our schools on a daily basis to make sure we do not need to modify our plans. We will, though, modify, as necessary depending upon the data we gather about COVID-19 in our community. That is why it is very important that, as a community, we continue to do what we can to prevent and minimize the spread. We know that the greatest prevention activity is getting a vaccine if one is 12 years of age or older. We are trying to prevent additional cases in our area as well as reduce the opportunity for the Delta variant to replicate and grow stronger in our area.
To learn more about the information shared at the board meeting, view the presentation slides, or watch the video here. We expect more information to be produced over the next few weeks. We will share that information as it becomes available and will provide additional details at the August 9 Board of Education meeting.
Sincerely,
Adrian B. Talley, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Sinceramente,
Adrian B. Talley, Ed.D.
Superintendente
