Classroom & Wing Culture
Teaching expectations (hallway, cafeteria, bathroom, playground, transitioning from one class to the next, etc.) should be ongoing every day. Praise the good things you observe. Remember, you should give at least 3 positive comments for every negative comment you make. It's not what you say, but it's how you say it. In order to continue to build positive relationships with scholars, you need to affirm them. Think of your relationship with scholars like a checking account. You need to make deposits (positives) before you make a withdrawal (negatives). If you continue to use negative language and actions with scholars without building them up and establishing a trusting relationship, your account will be overdrawn. At that point, the relationship with a scholar will be damaged and may never be repaired. If a relationship gets to this point, a scholar has no motivation to listen to you or want to please you. They begin to feel as though you don't care so it doesn't matter what they do. As part of your ongoing weekly observations, I will be recording the number of positive vs. negative interactions I observe between you and your scholars. Building relationships is essential to a strong, positive classroom culture.
Observations of classroom culture will be extended for 2 more weeks. Feedback will be provided to you through the interactive classroom framework tool. We will review how to find this information this week during your planning.
