January 2018
Message from the Principals
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy New Year to all of you! We are wishing you and your family the best in 2018!
It's hard to believe next week is the end of the first semester. On Monday, January 15, we begin second semester. Just a reminder that the last full day of school for students is Wednesday, May 30th and on Thursday, May 31st students will have a half day and will be dismissed at noon. Again, this is due to the early start this past August to allow for all of the District construction projects during the summer of 2018.
Parents you will see a flyer below inviting you to a community information night for parents, students, staff and community about Cyber Safety and Bullying being hosted in our District. This informational night is on Tuesday, January 16, 6:00-7:00 pm at the Muskego High School PAC. Many of you have lots of questions about this topic and the speaker Justin Patchin is a professor of criminal justice at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and is an expert in the area of teens and technology with a particular focus on cyber bullying and social networking.
Students in Grade 5 and 6 and then a separate session for Grade 7 and 8 will occur during the day on Tuesday, January 16. Students will spend about 45 minutes learning more from Dr. Justin Patchin. During homeroom, students will have a follow up conversation to support their understanding and learning about this topic.
Thank you for all you do to support school and your students learning. We look forward to a productive second semester and a partnership with all of you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Dawn Zandt, Principal, and Ms. Rachel Rydzewski, Associate Principal

Weather & Emergency Closing
Provided we have a current telephone number on file, families will receive a phone call if school is cancelled. You can also find information on our district website, through local media, or by following us on Twitter. When schools close, it is important to avoid jamming school phone lines. Instead of calling the school, please check local television or radio stations that will announce/list school delays or closings.
Regular attendance is important to success in school and we expect that when school is in session, students are engaged in learning. However, because we live in Wisconsin and our winter weather is unpredictable, the Muskego-Norway School District has established guidelines for decisions related to inclement weather. Please click here to refer to these guidelines when you have questions about possible school closings.
School closing decisions are not easy. Your child’s education is important and we want to provide learning opportunities on as many days as possible. Almost always, some people will agree with the decision, and some will not. Please know that we use our best judgment with the information we have available at the time.
PBIS Corner - Supporting PBIS at Home
Bay Lane uses Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a strategy in teaching appropriate social behavior and skills. At school, your child is part of Bay Lane’s Respectful, Responsible Community and is expected to model the behaviors in all environments. At Bay Lane, we call the following the core expectations, “The Bobcat Way”. To establish a great learning culture and community, Bay Lane staff have taught students lessons related to behaviors aligning with our core beliefs, and we have acknowledge students who are following the Bobcat Way with Red Tickets.
Consistency in both school and home is the best approach to making PBIS a success. As a parent, are you wondering how you can support the success of PBIS at home? Consider adapting the consequences system we use here at school for your home environment. This is a great way to implement PBIS strategies at home. With PBIS’s universal school system students have clear understanding of expectations and consequences, thus having a positive impact on the learning culture at Bay Lane.
Promoting a Respectful, Respectful Community
Mr. Bergum, Mr. Leiteritz and the PBIS committee have been planning and coordinating awesome videos about character development of our 3 Core Pillars; Respect, Responsibility and Community. Each month in homeroom, students learn about a character trait and watch a video from members of the Muskego Community and beyond! The videos are a great way for students to see and hear how to make an impact in school, at home and in the community.
