Message From Principal Appiah-McNulty:
Dear Senator Families,
Next week, we enter our 4th week of school. Definitely buckle up as the year always seems to fly by. Having our students back on campus has been great because we have the opportunity to connect with all of them on a deeper level. The ability to deeply engage with peers as well as classroom teachers creates authentic classroom interactions that are powerful drivers for a rich educational experience. RMS staff intends to use this time with our students not only to do better than last year, but to push ourselves beyond even our own high expectations as we strive for excellence.
As we look at our school theme of “If it doesn’t CHALLENGE you, it doesn’t CHANGE you”, it all goes back to thinking about our school community as a village. The saying “ It takes a village to raise a child” means that our school and home partners must walk as one because we need each other to help our Senators grow. We are thankful that when we reach out to families, you are connecting with us for the betterment of our students. Let’s continue to grow this relationship even stronger as the year progresses.
Speaking of partnerships, we have Parent-Teacher Conferences on September 15, 2021 from 11:00am-6:00pm. Due to the surge in Covid-19 cases, we have decided to hold our conferences virtually for multiple reasons (not having to have too many bodies in the building and flexibility to accommodate more families). Each teacher will provide a ten-minute window per student. If more time is needed, please schedule a conference with specific teachers prior to September 15th. Use this link to sign up for a conference time and teachers will ensure that each parent has received an email with either a google meet link or a zoom link for a virtual meeting by 8:30am on September 15th.
As our students get adjusted to coming back to school and having face to face interaction, we are working hard to teach expected behaviors. Please engage in conversations with your student about how things are going at school and ask open ended questions that go beyond yes and no answers. Please see our RMS Code of Conduct as well as PCSSD Handbook to know the rules and expectations to support our school culture.
Lastly, we are proud of our students who are participating in extracurricular activities. This is a great opportunity to meet friends, work on shared goals, and develop leadership skills. Way to go Senator Volleyball, Cross-Country, and Football teams. We are proud of each and every one of you!
Let’s have a great September Month.

RMS Math Instructional Coach: Ms. Cheryl Brown
During the week of September 7th through September 10th, your child will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on a computer or tablet. MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth. Teachers will use results to tailor classroom lessons and set goals for students. MAP Growth tests are unique and adapt to your child’s responses to measure your child’s skill level. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level.
Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it is easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.
MAP Growth reports also provide typical growth data for students who are in the same grade, subject and have the same starting performance level. This school year, students in grades six through eight will take tests in math, language arts, and reading. The NWEA MAP Growth Assessment testing windows will be in August/September (Fall Interim), January (Winter Interim), and May (Spring Interim). Following each testing period, we will share information with you to let you know how your child is performing academically.
We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about MAP Growth, see below:
RMS Testing Schedule for MAP Growth Interim I
NOTE: The RMS students will be tested through their Math and English classes on September 7 - 9, 2021. The NWEA MAP make-up testing will be conducted through pull-out test sessions during the testing window of September 10 - 24, 2021. Here are resources for discussing MAP Growth with parents.

RMS Archangels Project Collaboration
In conjunction with our PTO Representatives, our school would like to be a part of the Archangels Project in order to support the recovery mission in Afghanistan. To support the cause, students may participate in the penny wars contest or bring the following items to school (hygiene supplies, blankets and other items to be given to Afghan refugees). We will kick off this recovery mission on September 7th and end on September 14th. Please read more about this event below. Let’s Go, Senators.
