Schools of Choice (SOC) 2016-2017
To enter the SOC lottery, a family needs to complete and submit the application during the “Schools of Choice” window:

DATA Parents, do you have a child interested in coming to DATA next school year?
In order to participate in SOC, submission of SOC application is required. This requirement applies to those students with a sibling who is already in attendance and will continue their enrollment at DATA.

ATTENTION 8TH GRADERS - High school information nights are here! They provide a great opportunity to learn more about the programs offered at each school:
- January 12th, 6:30-8:30 pm, Ventura High School, in the auditorium
- January 13th, 5:30-7:30 pm, Buena High School, in the auditorium
- January 14th, 5:30 pm AND 7:30 pm (2 sessions, same content), Foothill Technology High School, in Spirito Hall
Graciela's Dream: One Family's Journey to College: A college awareness program for parents and students - Wednesday, January 13, from 3:30-5:30 pm, in DATA Room H2, we invite you to participate in our family reading program for parents and students. The main goal of the program is for you, the parent, to learn how to support your child in school and to understand what it takes to go to college. You will be introduced to the college preparation and application process and learn how to use the resources at your school. Space is limited. Festival of Talent - The 2016 Festival of Talent is coming February 27th! Auditions will be held Friday, January 15th from 4:00-7:30 pm and Saturday, January 16th from 10:00-5:00 pm in the Ventura High School auditorium. Information regarding audition instructions available in the office.
MIT WOMEN’S INITIATIVE - The MIT Women’s Initiative is a program designed to inform and inspire female students interested in STEM career opportunities. This year, female VUSD Middle and High School students are invited to hear speakers from the MIT Women’s Initiative group at Foothill Technology High School on Tuesday, January 19th, from 3:30-4:30 pm in Spirito Hall. Please see Ms. Erin in the office if you are interested in attending.
CA Coastal Art & Poetry Contest - Entries must have a California coastal or marine theme to qualify. Winning students will receive a $100 gift certificate to an art supply store and each winner’s teacher will receive a $50 gift certificate for instructional materials! Entries must be postmarked by January 30th. More information available in the front office.
Yearbook – Yearbooks on sale now for $35 from now until February 1st. Price will be $40 beginning February 2nd, so order now. Layaway program starts at $5. This year, there will be an online version of the yearbook and opportunity for the community to upload photos directly to the yearbook staff.
LIBRARY NEWS
Library Closed – The library will be closed NEXT Wednesday (January 20th) BEFORE SCHOOL. It will be open the rest of the day as usual.
Accelerated Reader Party - 23,500,000 words were read by the end of the year, and we have only 9,000,000 to reach our goal. Anyone who passes a quiz at 85% or more qualifies for the reward party at the end of the quarter.
Read to Succeed! - Sixth graders, you have until February 18th to earn a FREE ticket to Six Flags Magic Mountain. All you have to do is read 6 hours and complete a reading log. Stop by the library for details.
