Message from Principal Jonsson
Hello Parents & Families,
I am very proud of students and staff for evacuating the building, according to our practiced procedure, during the safety incident on Friday 12/8/23. Harborview staff and students are an amazing, resilient, cool-headed group of people!
If anyone did not receive the following information on their phone (through the JSD app and email), then please call the front desk (907) 523-1850 so we can verify your contact information.
On 12/8/23, at about 12:03pm, staff from Harborview Elementary reported to JPD that they had received a bomb threat by phone, at the school. JPD responded to the school and assisted staff with searching the building for explosive devices or threats; none were located.
Harborview Elementary was briefly evacuated to the back playground. JDHS briefly went into a stay-put to keep students inside the school and minimize activity outside until Harborview was cleared. After JPD cleared Harborview Elementary, both schools returned to normal activities.
Working with the FBI office, it is believed this recent threat is connected to other statewide threats made to communities earlier in the school year.
JSD App
Did you know JSD has an app?
The app will deliver real time district news to a smartphone for fast, up-to-date access. The app will feature: the latest district and school info as well as push notifications about breaking news, closures, weather, events, and more.
From a smartphone, go to the iTunes App Store® or Google Play®, search Juneau Borough Schools.
Once you have downloaded the app click "Allow for alerts", then on Welcome Screen, click "Choose From list". Then push the radio buttons for all the schools that your children attend.
Safety Message
Make sure your children are visible to drivers in the dark!
With daylight still decreasing and it being dark before school and earlier in the afternoons, please make sure your kids are wearing bright clothing and reflective gear to help drivers see them!
Reflective tape on the front and back of clothing and backpacks, headlamps, light up safety straps, bikes lights, reflective safety vests, and reflective tags on zippers are all very helpful.

We kindly request all families to send their children to school dressed up according to the theme of the day and to also bring an item to donate to the Glory Hall. Library News
Here's the latest news on Battle of the Books.
Students who choose to participate will have open practice in the library with Mr. Gilbert on Mondays and Thursdays at their lunchtime. Practice questions and Title/Author practice will be offered to all.
At first, teams are not as important as reading a few of the books to get started. When students begin forming teams, they should definitely pay attention to books their teammates have NOT read yet. An "okay" teammate will have read a minimum of 4 of the 12 titles. A "good" teammate will have read 6 of the 12 and, a great teammate will have read 8-12 of the titles. The team must have read all of the titles to compete successfully.
- Harborview Battle of the Books will take place during school on January 23rd (Fifth grade) and 24th (3/4th grade). Classmates of contestants may quietly attend. Times will be arranged soon.
- District Battle of the Books will be on February 6th (5th grade) and Feb. 7 (3/4th grade) at Dzantik'i Heeni MS. Time will be arranged after winter break.
- State Battle of the Books will be on February 28 and 29.
Let's get reading!
