Alternatives to Round Robin Reading
How can teachers help ensure all students are engaged in small group or whole class literacy activities? Try these alternatives to "round robin" or "popcorn" reading activities!
Oral Cloze
The teacher reads the text aloud. Students follow along silently. Throughout the reading, the teacher omits strategic words. Students say the missing word orally.
Whisper Read
All students whisper read the text as the teachers reads orally.
Choral Reading
Students and teachers read orally together.
Additional Ideas
These suggestions might work best in guided reading groups or for more independent readers:
- Everybody Reads: The teacher assigns a section of text and gives a purpose for the reading. An example might be to read from one heading to the next and be prepared to share two facts about the topic.
- Partner Read: Partner A reads a given section of text while Partner B follows along. Partner B summarizes the section. Partners switch roles for the next section of reading.
