Four math teachers from North Central Parke Schools attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference (NCTM) held in Nashville, Tennessee. Those attending were Beth Faust- Rockville Elementary, Roberta Hobbs- Turkey Run Elementary, Ashley McAmis- Parke Heritage Middle School and Miranda Goodwin- Parke Heritage High School.
Math educators from around the country came together to collaborate and learn new ways to provide instruction to their students. The sessions provided the teachers with tools and strategies that they can use in their classroom. It also gave them time to collaborate with other math teachers.
“I got some new ideas to use in the classroom and had to rethink things that I had been doing for years,” said Mrs. Hobbs. “Math is no longer to be done in isolation as a set of problems over and over. It is to be done in collaboration with others talking about the math and learning from what others have to say, everyone has a voice.”
Many sessions were about what NCTM considers best practice.
“I loved hearing what we are currently doing is best practice, but we also learned how we can make that better as well,” said Mrs. Faust. “We were given numerous ideas on manipulatives to use in the classroom across all grade levels.”
The Conference was sponsored by the school’s Title IV, Part A grant, which is a federal funding source that supports a well-rounded education by incorporating advanced classes, fine arts, foreign languages, STEAM, and other innovative programming for students.
