Puketapu School Newsletter

Week 2, Term 1 2020

Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners

Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart

From our Principal

Kia ora koutou,

Thank you for a really positive start to the 2020 school year here at Te Kura o Puketapu. We are delighted with the way that the 370 learners and their whanau have returned to school and have got back into the school rhythm. Thank you to all of the staff for the preparation you have done for our learners.

Our Learning Theme for this term is 'Ko Puketapu Matou - We are Puketapu'.

At Puketapu School we believe it is important to:

  • Make connections between people, places and things in their world | te waihanga hononga

  • Take part in caring for this place | te manaaki i te taiao

  • Understand how things work here and adapt to change | te mārama ki te āhua o ngā whakahaere me te mōhio ki te panoni

  • Show respect for kaupapa, rules and the rights of others | te mahi whakaute

We love teaching this learning theme as it links with all of our key beliefs of teaching and learning at Puketapu School.

Everyone here at Te Kura o Puketapu wish you and your families a great school year.

KIA KAHA - KIA MĀIA - KIA MANAWANUI

KO PUKETAPU MĀTOU - We Are Puketapu

Our Learning Theme for Term 1:

Ko Puketapu Mātou / We are Puketapu

Moemoea/Aspiration:

All of our akonga (learners) will have an understanding of the concept of:

  • our cultural narrative

  • who they are

  • our school vision and values.

As part of this learning theme we are wanting our students to have a strong sense of belonging, where they come from and who they are. We also want our akonga to really think about who their role models are, why they are their role models and what they want to be when they are older.

These will be displayed visually around our learning spaces and we invite you to come in and have conversations with your children about these.

School Fees... there are none!

Due to a change in the way the Government provides funding to schools, we are delighted to confirm that there are:
  • No School Fees!
  • No School Donations!
  • No Activity Fees!

The only thing you are asked to pay for is stationery, camps and optional activities such as after school/weekend sports teams.

Sport in 2020

Touch, Miniball, Basketball, Netball, Hockey, Inline Hockey, Canoe Polo...

If you haven't already filled one in, pick up a form from the office.

Touch starts Wednesday 19 February, so get your registration forms back in asap!

There are also other sports that you can play outside of school - see the notice for details.

PLAY BIKE @ PUKETAPU

Your neighbourhood school is a great place to ride and play on a summer afternoon or weekend. Play Bike is an invitation to primary-aged children to socialise, ride, have fun and learn new skills in a traffic-free off-road environment, whilst guided by qualified coaches. Weather dependent.

At Puketapu School, 4.00pm - 5:30pm TODAY Wednesday, 12 February.

We will have the pool open and a free sausage sizzle going on too.

This is us!

Totara 3 have been working on their self portraits! Come and visit the space to check them out!

Parent Portal: LINC-ED

LINC-ED allows teachers, parents, and students to access learning in an online environment that is secure, easy, and effective. It allows teachers to share learning anytime, anywhere and can be viewed on any device.

Currently parents can see:

  • Reading, Writing and Maths (Number & Algebra) Goals (what they are working on and what they have achieved)

  • Learning Comments and School Values Comment (Kia Kaha - Do your best, Kia Māia - Be courageous, Kia Manawanui - Have a heart) as part of regular reporting

  • Finance information

  • Newsletters and notices

In the future we want to use this platform to:

  • Share Student Learning that your child has selected to share with you

  • Have Parents share learning that has happened at home

How do I access my child’s LINC-ED page?

LINC-ED can be used on your mobile device by app:

Calling for parent help!

SPRING into Maths

Start counting,

Patterns,

Reinforcing strategy,

Identifying numbers,

Number facts,

Game.

Mrs Paterson would like to invite parents/whanau to be trained in taking a group of students for the SPRING maths program.

SPRING is intended to help move students from one level of maths to another by developing the knowledge and skills they need.

It is half an hour a day 4 days a week for 5 weeks only. (We can start another group of students if you are available for more).

Teaching sessions would happen in class or in a space we can find for you in school.

Mrs Paterson will do the planning and training for anyone who is available to help with SPRING in our school. We know this works for students

and would love to run this again this year.

Please email spaterson@puketapu.school.nz if you are interested and available to help.

You do not have to be a whizz at maths, you just need a kind heart for our tamariki .

Looking forward to fun maths sessions, working with our students and whanau throughout 2020.

Lucky Book Club - Issue 1

Lucky Book Club orders are out!

With the start of a new school year comes the opportunity to support your child in reaching their highest potential through books and reading.

Issue 1 has over 30 pages filled with reading inspiration and learning resources, including 25 titles at $5 or less.

Last day for orders is Friday 21 February.

Order at the office or online at The Loop

Lost Property Already...

After just two days of school we have hoodies, hats, shoes, drink bottles...

Please name clothes and property so we can get them back to their rightful owner.

Zero Waste / Para Kore

We are so delighted with the first few days of our Para Kore system.

Our shared goal is having no waste to throw away when we have finished eating.

Already our school is showing a positive change and we hope it is helping parents keep and eye on what food is being eaten each day too.

Thank you for your support!

Oops!

In our list of staff last week, we left off one of our team!

Mrs Sandra Fonoti is another of our wonderful support staff team.

Puketapu Hats

Last year we were able to supply bucket hats at the cost of $5 each. Unfortunately the supplier we have had, currently tripled the price on these so we are actively looking around for a new one! If anyone knows of or has contacts in the screen printing and supply of bucket hats please contact the office.

Communication

Throughout the year we will do our best to communicate with all our school whanau, through newsletters, notices, Facebook, texts...

We ask that everyone remembers that communication is two way - so we also want to hear from you.

Your first point of contact will usually be your child's homeroom teacher, but you can also contact the school office.

If you have any questions or need more information, please ask.

Immunisations

Year 7&8 immunisations are provided free by the TDHB - Permission forms went home yesterday and need to be back ASAP. Even if your child is not being immunised please still return the form.

Cricket

Some great people from Taranaki Cricket have been at school this week teaching cricket skills to the Kauri learners. It has been great fun!

They will be back in a little while to share the fun with other classes.
