D209 Teachers On Strike
Beginning Friday, March 4, 2022
Hello Proviso Parents and Students,
Proviso 209 Teachers are on Strike. There will be no classes on Friday, March 4. There are also no classes on Monday, March 7 due to a scheduled school holiday.
Today, the Proviso Teachers Union (PTU), which represents District 209’s approximately 280 educators, announced that it will strike beginning tomorrow, Friday, March 4. As a result, schools will be closed tomorrow. Please note that Monday, March 7 is a nonattendance day for students and staff in observance of the Casimir Pulaski Day holiday. All athletic activities will continue.
We are disappointed that our educators are again contemplating this potential disruption to teaching and learning, particularly given additional movement made by the District in its most recent offer, which was presented to the union on Tuesday, March 1.
In this offer, the District increased its salary proposal from 7% over 3 years (2% in the first and 2.5% in the second and third years) to 9% over three years (3% each year). We question the union’s intent to bargain in good faith, given that in the counterproposal presented to the District today, they moved backwards and increased their salary demands by more than $300,000.
Currently, the union is demanding a 13.25% increase over the three-year contract (4% in the first year, 4.5% in the second and 4.75% in the third year). In addition, the union is also demanding “longevity” bonuses for all teachers of $1,250 in the first year and $600 in the second year. The District remains firm in our position that salary increases at the level being demanded by the union are neither sustainable, nor in the best fiscal interest of our parents and other local resident taxpayers.
The Board of Education is grateful for the calls and emails we have received urging both parties to resolve their differences and to put the needs of our students first. We want a fair multi-year contract that compensates our teachers fairly and competitively for their work, while operating within the financial means of our District. Thus, advancing the best interests of all District 209 stakeholders, including our students, parents, and community.
We are continuing to work toward resolution through continued informal communications with the union, both directly and through the federal mediator. Our next scheduled negotiations with the federal mediator are planned for Monday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 9. To support our families in ensuring that our students are safe and productive during this unfortunate disruption to their education, the District will notify all parents, students and staff about the status of our negotiations via robocalls and emails as soon as possible. The district will also commence the start of breakfast and lunch meal service for all scholars, starting on Tuesday, March 8. Further information on pick-up locations and hours will be posted on our website.
