Latina Heritage Month
Every year, from September 15th to October 15th, our country pays homage to Hispanic Americans who have had a positive impact and have strengthened our nation and society. During this month, our nation celebrates the contributions of the Hispanic community and the important presence of Hispanic and Latin Americans. These dates were chosen to commemorate two historic events, the formal signing of the Independence Act for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on 15 September 1821. Mexico's Independence Day, further marked by the start of a conflict against Spanish control on September 16, 1810. Featured below we recognize significant individuals who have helped pave the way for Latina culture. From Left to right ( Cesar Chavez, St. Rose of Lima, and Selena)
St. Rose of Lima
Scholars recognize the piety and chastity of St. Rose of Lima. Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru, to Spanish colonizers, and named Isabel Flores de Olivia, she was extraordinarily beautiful. From a young age, Rose wanted to become a nun. She performed daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and received communion daily. St. Rose died on August 25, 1617, at the age of 31.
