Curriculum Corner
We are off and writing in our Writer's Notebooks! From now until camp, we will be focusing on strategies writers use to come up with ideas for stories. I will be finishing up the book A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher with them. This week, we will be studying Snatches of Talk (using pieces of conversations around us as inspiration) and keeping lists of interesting words or topics. We will begin narrative writing after we get back from camp.
Reading:
The first unit in reading will cover realistic fiction. I will be reading Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt as my mentor text. Students will be expected to have their own reading book within that genre that they will be reading independently, conferring with me, and practicing reading strategies while they read. This week and next week, we will be working on making movies in our mind as we read, working with a partner to enhance comprehension, and developing ideas and understanding of characters.
Indiana History:
We will be starting our year by learning about the government at the national, state, and local levels. This week, we will be focusing on the responsibilities and branches of the local government. Students will have a quiz next Wednesday. They each have a notebook that covers what we have discussed in class. The quiz will cover vocabulary and important concepts. I will be posting a Kahoot! on Canvas (we will also play this in class) that students can use to review topics.
Science:
We are starting our unit on heredity, animal adaptations, environment, and animal structures. We have been discussing environmental factors and how they affect animal behavior. We will be putting some of our mealworms in the refrigerator to see how a cold environment affect their behavior and life cycle!
Math:
We have been working hard on traditional algorithms for addition and subtraction. This has been a review for some students and new information for others. We also have spent time working on problem solving and reviewing place value, rounding, and estimation. Next week, we will work on conversions between inches, feet, and yards; points, line segments, lines, and rays; and angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.
STEPS to SIEW:
This year, student will be participating in a new curriculum called Second Step. At Stonegate, we will be referring to it as "Steps to Strong In Every Way." Every Friday, students will be participating in a lesson focused on social-emotional learning. This week, we will be focusing on respecting similarities and differences.
