PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY
I'm still questioning how this is a prize? Nonetheless, Dr. Lyle Sokoloff stepped into my shoes today and took over the reigns as principal. He won this opportunity through the PTA's silent auction a few weeks ago. Like any good leader, he brought donuts for the staff and got the day started by welcoming students to campus. He handled a few bits of business...calling parents, supporting teachers and students, working to solve problems around campus, and answering emails. With his music cued and ready to rock, he got on the intercom and expertly handled our Best on the Beach shout outs for the day. This included a pledge to the Miami Dolphins and condolences to the Patriots for missing last year's playoffs. He delivered the whales to the Webster Wear winners and stopped in a few classrooms to check on kids. He finished the day by running a staff meeting. Dr. Sokoloff was an inspiring leader and well...we offered him the job. Please direct any and all future concerns to drlylesokoloff@principal.webster Take good care of yourselves.
HISTORY COMES ALIVE
Webster was transformed into a living museum this morning as figures from past and present descended on our campus to enlighten us all about their lives. Students from Ms. Lockwood and Mrs. Stark's classes researched biographical information on a variety of their favorite people and learned something about their impact on humanity. In full costume and with action buttons close at hand, students came to life in our living history museum and shared their thoughts and insights with the community. We were treated to the likes of Jane Goodall, David Bowie, The Rock, Neil Armstrong, Lebron James, Frida Kahlo, and so many more. A huge thank you to our parents, who turned out in mass for this celebration of joy in learning. That was awesome, friends! Ms. Lockwood and Mrs. Stark...you ROCK!!
KIDS SPEAK OUT
"Can everyday heroes bring out optimism in others?" Using this prompt, fourteen of our fourth graders put pen to paper and crafted persuasive speeches in response to this question. All fourteen agreed that everyday heroes CAN and do, in fact, have a positive impact on others. Students spoke with such clarity and passion, citing parents, teachers, and a host of others as everyday heroes who spread optimism to the world. The Optimist Club of Malibu had members on hand to judge these speeches with the goal of sending three students on to the "Final Round of Kids Speak Out!" This will be held next Wednesday, May 31st, in Raitt Recital Hall at Pepperdine.
Congratulations to our three finalists: Moral Zadikov, Shana Childress, and Preston Giambattista. In addition, thank you to Mona Kyle and the Optimist Club of Malibu and our fourth grade educators, Mr. K and Mrs. Morris for supporting our students in developing these valuable communication skills.
BRING YOUR SON TO WORK DAY
Today, Dee Dee Cooper's son, Randall, shared with the TK/K/1st graders what it is like to be a firefighter. The students recently learned about different jobs that people do in social studies. Also, Randall taught the students about fire safety and what to do in case of a fire.

WATER WORLD
Pre-K and TK changed into their beach gear and enjoyed a wonderful STEAM day of water play! We splashed, chased bubbles, tossed water balloons, rested, and chit chatted on our beach towels. We certainly laughed a lot! Thank you Pre-K for the best day ever! - Miss Papale
ARTS IN EDUCATION
This is the fourth year that the Santa Monica College Dance Department will be providing World Dance for the SMMUSD Elementary Schools. The SMC Dance Academy is an instructional program taught during the school day and leads to the performance we were treated to this morning. This specialized college pathway program is designed to encourage students to think independently, to be able to work with others, to value creative thought and diversity, and to be responsible global citizens.
The SMC Dance Academy’s goal for delivering dance instruction to SMMUSD’s students is based on our mission to nurture the development of a skill set that students will use to build fulfilling lives for themselves and their community. According to the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), dance is a powerful ally for developing every aspect of elementary age children. Dance helps children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively.
The fourth graders at Webster learned a Hawaiian Dance this year and concluded their program with a beautiful performance that included some active parent participation. Not only did you show up to support, but you crushed your first hula lesson, parents!!! Nice work, everyone. Much thanks to all involved for making this happen.

GLOBAL REPORT ON THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION
Google for Education collaborated with research partner Canvas8 to conduct a study across 24 countries on the future of education. The result is a three-part global report highlighting insights from around the world.
"There is a need to develop human beings who are internally strong and resilient. The importance of knowledge transmission will decline in order to place a greater emphasis on fundamental and higher thinking skills, including children's socio-affective spheres."
- Sylvia Schmelkes, researcher at Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico

Developing character and growth mindsets is invaluable and will be a major focus of ours here at Webster over the years. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity and kindness. In addition, we will notice and value it in each other.
