Vocabulary Parade!
Dear Families,
This month student’s will be working intensely on vocabulary. Learning and understanding new words is an important part of academic growth. Learning and using new words will help improve reading skills and prepare your child for future learning in all subject areas. In keeping with the season and student’s excitement over the upcoming holidays we will be creating costumes to represent a vocabulary word.
Sometime this week we will be reading the book Miss Alaineus A Vocabulary Disaster in class. Ask your child to tell you about it. Once we have read the book I will be passing out a vocabulary word to each child. Their job is to create a costume that accurately represents their vocabulary word. This can be a creative interpretation of the word. The word must appear somewhere on their costume. In addition each student will be required to prepare a written assignment as outlined below of their word and they must be able to pronounce and explain to fellow students their word and its meaning(s).
This project is due October 30th and will count as a test grade in reading, language arts, spelling, and writing. Students in both third and fourth grade will be doing this project and will be having a Vocabulary Parade for the school. More information about the time of the parade will be provided as we get closer to the due date. As always parents are welcome to attend!
Each student must turn in an 8.5 by 11 inch paper to their teacher with the following information:
(1) Vocabulary word
(2) Definition
(3) A synonym, antonym, example, or non-example of the word.
(4) A sentence using the word correctly
(5) Your name and teacher’s name
This information can be typed or handwritten. It must be neat and easily read.
Example:
Jester
-a retainer formerly kept to provide casual entertainment
Synonym- entertainer
Example- clown
Non- Example- policeman
(there may not be a synonym or antonym. You can give an example or non-example instead.)
The court’s jester danced and recited ballads for the king in brightly colored garments.

Tardies and Attendance
Please be sure your child is at school and on time each day! We cannot express to you how important it is to your child's education to be here each day and on time. We have so much to cover on a daily basis, so if they show up mid-morning, they have already missed a lesson or more. We have some students who are struggling to pass right now, due to strictly not being here consistently or on time.
We are also trying to prepare your student for intermediate school...where they are expected to do a lot of growing up quickly to be successful in school.
Please help us set the tone that school is IMPORTANT and that means holding them accountable for the hours of school! Obviously, if they are ill - they need to seek medical attention and follow doctors orders.
We greatly appreciate your help with this matter!!!
