Education Options for Fall 2020
Madison County School System
2020-2021 Academic Calendar Amended 6/25/2020
Tonight, the Madison County Board of Education approved an amended 2020-2021 school calendar with a start date of August 19.
The decision to change the date to August 19 was based on information and guidance received from Dr. Mackey and the Alabama State Department of Education. A copy of the updated school calendar can be found on our website at mcssk12.org.
Thank you for your patience as we work through the fluid nature of dealing with COVID-19. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff are our priorities as we seek to best serve our students. We look forward to seeing our students in the fall.

Parents,
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through the challenges that have arisen from the Covid-19 pandemic. I’m proud of how our staff, students, and communities have adjusted and risen to the occasion to keep education and safety a priority. As we prepare to return to school in the fall, we will be faced with changes that require flexibility in order to keep everyone safe and healthy while educating our students. We are committed to providing every student in our school system a high-quality education.
I know many of you are wondering what our plans are for the new school year. I want to make clear that our plan will provide families with flexible options and high-quality instruction. Rest assured, our district leadership team is working on plans to meet the needs of all our students and their families. At this time, we plan to reopen as scheduled by our original school calendar. The first day of school will be August 5, 2020. If serious concerns arise or the CDC or State guidance changes, we may revisit our school calendar and consider a later start date. Below is an overview of the three flexible instructional opportunities that will be offered to your children:
Madison County Schools is planning to offer traditional, face-to-face instruction at all of our schools. As you know, the data surrounding Covid-19 is constantly changing, and the CDC guidance for reopening schools may be adjusted as we approach August. We will continue to review the CDC recommendations, and we will share any anticipated adjustments to our routines and procedures as we approach our August opening.
If your family prefers to keep your students home, we will provide a virtual learning option at all of our schools. This virtual learning option will be different from the digital backpack offered this past Spring. Instead, this option will provide a rich instructional program that includes video instruction, student practice, teacher feedback, and grades. This would be a virtual learning option that would meet all student needs while keeping your student connected to their home school. The Madison County School System will make high-quality virtual learning available for every grade level and at every school in our district.
Finally, families who reside within the Madison County School district have the option of enrolling your 3rd through 12th-grade students in the Madison County Virtual Academy. With this option, your student would be enrolled in MCVA rather than their home school. The program uses Odysseyware curriculum while also providing access to a high-quality teaching staff for face-to-face tutoring.
The Madison County School System will provide a variety of options to meet the educational needs of your students while ensuring that your family’s preference is honored. We understand that with the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19, each family’s needs are different. These three options will allow each family to make the decision that best meets those needs.
Please remember to complete the Powerschool online enrollment for returning students as soon as possible. We will remain in communication with our families to provide updates, and we will allow parents to decide which option best meets the needs of their children. Families will be contacted to select their preferred option by July 15. Madison County Schools is here for you. In the meantime, if you have questions please reach out to your local school administrators. We look forward to all of our students returning in the Fall where we can provide your students with a high-quality education.
Sincerely,
Allen Perkins
Superintendent
