Fourth Quarter News from Library and STEAM 2016
Library - Mrs. Eastwood
The 4th and 5th grade students voted on their favorite Great Stone Face book and those that read at least 5 of the 12 books were able to participate in our celebration picnic in which the state-wide winner was announced. Students entered drawings for prizes of books or gift certificates or a chance to be the first to read one of next year's books! We had twice as many students attend the picnic as we did last year! I'm so glad to see the increased participation and excitement to branch out and read a variety of recommended books. The Kensington Public Library is so supportive and has already purchased some of our Great Stone Face books for 2017 so that your new 4th-6th grade students can start reading them over the summer!
In this last quarter, students learned about the significance of Memorial Day and how it differs from Veteran's Day. They also explored a couple of sites to learn about the coming Olympics, athletes, Olympic sports, and the countries participating in the Olympics.
Grades 2-5 wrote letters to inform Mrs. Ruel, Mr. Flynn or their own teacher about the things we have learned in library this year. The recipients enjoyed reading what the students had to say about their time in the library!
I hope that everyone has an enjoyable summer with lots of time to relax and read! Hopefully the lists you were given provide some good starting points, and your child's interests are the best ways to guide fun summer reading.
You can keep up to date with our library happenings and resources and find further reading ideas by going to the KES Library page.
Best wishes to our fifth graders as they move on to middle school! We will miss your shining faces!
