What happened?
The Union and the Confederate armies clashed on September 17 in the Battle of Antietam. It was the single bloodiest day of the entire war. By the time the war had come to an end, close to 6,000 Union and Confederate soldiers lay dead or dying, and another 17,000 were wounded. Although both armies suffered heavy losses, neither were destroyed.
