Dear Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers in the OLC Community,
Confirmation
Congratulations to all our Confirmation candidates and their families on receiving the Sacrament last weekend in our Parish Church. Thank you to Miss Anita Hurst, Mr Sean McSevich and Mrs Amie Meyer for leading the faith development of our students. Mrs King, the school rock band and choir were just spectacular. (Even though several members were unable to attend due to COVID).
COVID
I, like many other school leaders, remain extremely concerned about the impact on workload and pressure on staff as a result of the ongoing high level of absences due to COVID-19 and other illnesses.
Accurate reporting will be the real challenge with the high level of absences.
Please use the COVID data collection on the school website if your child tests positive to COVID.
STAFF CAR PARK
Wheels After Meals (WAM)
Our next “Wheels After Meals” is at lunchtime on Tuesday 24 May. All students from years 1-6 are most welcome to bring along their scooter, skateboard, roller-skates, helmet and protective gear. All equipment can be left on the car park side of Mr Lee’s office before school and collected at the end of the day. At lunchtime we close the gates to the top car park and the students ride in a clockwise direction after eating their lunch.
Two Minute Footy Challenge
Our “Two Minute Footy Challenge” will continue on dry lunchtimes when Mr Lee does not have a supervision duty. It is just too hard to choose a date for each class with the current weather. The competition is for boys and girls from Year 1-6 to see how many marks they can take with a partner over a 5-metre distance in two minutes.
The Year 5 leaders are Xavier & Darcy with 47, Jamison & Max on 43, while the leading girls are Lily Eve and Tiare on 12.
Kindy Enrolments
Please place your sibling enrolments into Mrs Marrell in the front office ASAP.
St Mary McKillop Enrolments
To ensure your child’s place in Year 7 at our local Catholic Secondary school, you are required to place their enrolment form into St Mary McKillop College when your child is in Year 4 (or earlier) at OLC, even siblings. Our Year 4 students have a day at the College this year and interviews take place in Year 5.
Uniforms
Parents are responsible for dressing their students in the correct school uniform. Please take responsibility for this.
ABSENTEES
Advance Notice
All our staff are participating in a Professional Development Day on Friday 3 June and there is a public holiday on Monday 6 June.
Did you know?
- Bring some change for Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. Mr D. is bringing notes!
- Mila Wheatley’s (PP) dad has a surfboard on top of his car
- We raised $430 for local charities in our casual clothes day last week.
- Makai (1) has a sensational left foot drop punt kick.
- Huddy Cunningham (PP) always enjoys a good time and a chat.
- Freida Whitely (6) is a beautiful, kind and well-mannered girl. She is also excellent at swimming and a tenacious Aussie Rules football player.
- Alexis, Billie-Rose and Scarlett (5) were interviewing Kindy students for the school newspaper at 1.17 pm last Friday. (Would love to see the first edition of that one).
- Tilly Richardson’s (6) aged father is nearly as old as David Mundy but naturally a lot quicker and more skilled than David Mundy.
- Lucas (6) enjoys playing striker in his soccer team, “Rampage”.
- Mr Lee thinks Eve Storey (K) is tough as goat’s knees. Flying through the Kindy playground faster than Mr Danaher exiting a CEWA meeting, Eve tripped on a log and went down for the count. She just picked herself up, dusted herself off and got on with her lunchtime. What a girl!
- Felix and Fletcher (2) are highly skilled at doing jobs for Mr Lee. Tell them once and consider the job done.
- 99 students were absent on Monday.
- Four of our SAC (School Advisory Council) members coach junior footy. (If you want something done ...).
- The Staff Car Park on Sloan Drive is for school staff - strange that.
Watching and listening to Arlo Turner (K) excitedly explain how his Grandma was picking him up from school last Friday. (While happily and independently swinging on the Kindy swing).

RE NEWS
Confirmation
The Holy Spirit was on everyone’s mind this week, with one student even being reminded by his outdoor firepit that God is everywhere! Congratulations to the Year 6 candidates who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last weekend, and to those prayer friends who supported them by being present at the occasion. The Holy Spirit was well and truly alive, and our students were privileged to have the service conducted by Bishop Gerard and Fr Ian. A very big thank you to Miss Hurst and Mr McSevich for the time and effort that went in to preparing for this day, and to Mrs King and the OLC Rock Band for leading the music ministry so joyfully. Well done to all!
Reconciliation Walk Busselton May 27
Next Friday representatives from Year 6 will be participating in a short walk from the Merenj Boodja Native Bush Garden in Busselton to the Youth and Community Activities Building on the Busselton Foreshore (near the Skatepark) for national Reconciliation week.
They will join local elder Aunty Gloria Hill for the walk and will also have an opportunity to participate in a small creative activity that will be displayed during NAIDOC Week.
The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians - individuals, families, communities, organisations and government - to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
Vinnies Winter Appeal
It’s always wonderful to see the Year 6 students showing their initiative to demonstrate our school values by thinking of others. I was approached by a small group wanting to help keep local people affected by poverty and homelessness warm over winter, by collecting donations for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. Should you have spare clean blankets, pillows or jackets that you wish to donate, please drop them to the front office. Compassion for everyone.
Laudato Si Week
This week we have been celebrating Pope Francis’ letter to the world, titled “Laudato Si”. This translates from Italian to “Praise be to you, my Lord”, and encourages us to care for the earth, our common home. OLC students have participated in several activities this week to demonstrate respect and gratitude for our earth, and have been praying the following prayer:
Loving God, as we begin Laudato Si’ Week, help us to see your presence in all of creation. With Pope Francis, we want to try to care for the earth; the water, plants, animals and all people. Help us to make the changes we need to help our beautiful world always reflect your goodness. We make this prayer through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
We are beyond blessed to live in this most beautiful part of the world, and we all need to work together to keep our Earth healthy.
Beanies for Timor
Wear your favourite beanie to school on Thursday 2nd June and bring a gold coin donation. This will go towards the costs of shipping the pre loved and used items collected last term, to children and families in Timor. Mr. Lee has a special surprise for anyone wearing an Essendon Beanie!
Pastoral Care
If you or anyone you know of is ill from COVID or any other illness, please email to arrange some meals.
