A MESSAGE FROM MS. ELLISON
Dear Glen Grove Families,
Spring is in the air! We are so lucky to have had such beautiful weather this week. This week we also completed four of our IAR testing sessions. Your children did a wonderful job and did their very best. Our teachers also did a fantastic job of creating a calm and supportive testing environment. We have one more literacy test to complete on Monday and then we are finished!
Just a reminder that this Wednesday is the Glen Grove orientation for incoming second grade families. Please spread the word that we will be hosting this orientation at 9:45am and 5:30pm in our Library Resource Center.
As we start to wind down this year, we have several important retirements to celebrate. Mr. Nitz (fifth grade), Ms. Poulakos (fifth grade), Ms. Birsa (interventionist) and Ms. Hamilton (resource teacher) are all retiring. We are so grateful for all that they have done for our school and our students! This is a significant change for the building and also means that we will have changes in teaming and grade levels for teachers. Additionally, as I shared in the spring, we will no longer be looping our students at fourth and fifth grade. As we think about next year and class placement, please feel free to share any important information about your child that should be considered when doing class placement for the 2023-2024 school year. This should not include specific teacher requests. If you would like to provide optional feedback, please fill out the School Year 2023-2024 Placement Input Form. All input needs to be submitted by April 21st in order to be considered.
Finally, this week we are launching Kindness Week. Look for some information in this newsletter on how you can support this week at home. We look forward to filling the halls of Glen Grove with random acts of kindness all week long!
In partnership,
Kate Ellison

FOOD & NUTRITION SERVICE IN D34: SUPPORTING STUDENT HEALTH & WELLNESS
The District 34 Food & Nutrition Services team is dedicated to making sure every D34 student has a positive and nutritious lunch experience. We follow the the guidelines of of the federal government’s National School Lunch Program, which allows us to provide meals to all children, including providing assistance to low-income families through the free/reduced breakfast/lunch program.

FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE
All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:45 a.m. at (847) 657-2394. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.
If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m., please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.
Mandatory Health Forms for 2023-2024 Incoming 6th Graders
All incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to August 24, 2023. Your child will NOT be able to start middle school until the physical form is turned in. If your child's health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. SERVICE CLUB NEWS
Hello everyone! Service Club is proud to announce the return of Glen Grove Kindness Week!
The Service club kids have worked hard to plan out a week of theme days for next week, April 17-21.
We'd love as much participation as possible to try and demonstrate our commitment to a kinder world!
LOST TECHNOLOGY ITEM
We have TWO (2) smart watches in the office along with a FitBit which were found in the school. If your student is missing his/her smart watch, please have them check with the office to identify it.
Thank you!
SCIENCE CORNER
Our 3rd grade classrooms have begun transitioning out of science to the next social studies unit so we can end the year with lots and lots of science! Butterfly larvae are on their way so we can actively study the life cycle of a living organism later this month. Stay tuned for our butterfly release date some time in mid-May.
Our 4th grade scientists continue to investigate the relationship between waves and energy. Check out Ms. Presslak's class making observations of our homemade wave machine to consider how energy can disturb matter. All of this work will lead our scientists to creating their own energy-based processes for communicating information across open spaces without speaking. Ask your scientists how they plan on completing that task!
5th grade Gators are quickly approaching the end of their Earth Science unit by determining how different Earth spheres interact to create some of the most amazing phenomena on our planet. From tornadoes to geysers to forest fires, our Earth scientists will be looking at how the different spheres interact with one another in constructive and destructive ways. And as they wrap up that project, they will be getting ready for the final frontier in 5th grade science this year....space!
Finally, coming up soon is a very important holiday in the world of science: Earth Day! Saturday, April 22nd is the special day and there are many different opportunities to check out and consider taking part in with your family. Here are a few to consider:

ORCHESTRA - SPRING CONCERT
CHORUS NEWS
Hello chorus families! Don't forget to save the date for our upcoming spring concert on Tuesday, May 16 at 6:30 pm. More details to come soon!
Also, this is a quick reminder that 4th & 5th grade chorus rehearsal is cancelled on Thursday, April 20 after school. Please make sure that you and your child have made arrangements for that day! (3rd grade chorus will still rehearse as scheduled on April 19.)
LRC BOOK NOOK
The Book Fair is Coming
We are very excited to use a new company this year, Literati Book Fairs. Our online fair (efairs.literati.com) is open for business right now! All purchases support Glen Grove, as we get a percent of the sales back. Families can purchase digital gift cards for students to use online or in person at our book fair that will run May 8th through May 12th. The fair will be open during the Glen Grove Game Night event on Friday, May 12 from 5:30-6:30.
The company even has book club subscriptions that families can purchase. The book clubs are divided into age groups: Adventurers (7-9 year olds) and Navigators (8-10 year olds) and Aviators (9-11 year olds) and Trailblazers (10-12 year olds). They have easy and free returns and families can cancel at any time. 10% of every dollar spent goes back to the school.
All library books are due on Tuesday, May 30. All books still out will be considered "LOST", and the cost of the books will be billed through the students’ PowerSchool accounts. The library would much rather have their books than your money. Students can check their library account at any time by logging into Destiny Discover. Under My Stuff, students can see their current checkouts with the due date for each item.
Dear all!
Spending time together, especially during opportunities such as games and sports, are important because they teach us valuable lessons such as following directions, listening attentively, fine motor skills, math, and most importantly - that people need people. We need people to build skyscrapers, climb mountains, and lift up communities. Read more about ways we all celebrate people and the different roles that they play in our lives in the GGCP newsletter below.
