Greetings Westside Families! This week we are celebrating the wonderful world of literacy! Strong reading and comprehension skills are the best foundation for success in school, and we are honoring all the work students have done thus far to improve their knowledge. See below for information about our week's activities.
Wednesday, Jan. 26th, will be class, group/club and make-up individual photos. Flyers will be coming home if you would like to order. You can also click on the link HERE.
Students are invited design this year's cover of our 21-22 Westside Yearbook! See below for more information. You can also order a copy of the yearbook HERE.
Florida's Department of Education has shared the new B.E.S.T. Standards in a parent-friendly format. Please see the documents attached at the end of this newsletter.
For your planning purposes, there are multiple days in February that are Student Holidays that were originally saved for hurricane-makeup (not utilized) and a teacher professional development day. Please mark in your calendars the following dates where schools will be closed:
Monday, Feb. 7th
Friday, Feb. 18th
Friday, Feb. 21st.

PENNY WAR UpdatesOur PENNY WAR has been awesome this week! The totals at this time are: PK/Kinder +2124 1st Grade +1898 2nd Grade +2150 3rd Grade -233 4th Grade -1767 5th Grade -3024 6th Grade -1417 Pennies will gain points for your grade level while silver coins will take points away from other grades! Feeling REALLY generous? Dollar bills of any denomination add bonus points!! Which grade level will win the pizza party?? Watch our Facebook page for daily updates on who is in the lead! | Blanket DriveThank you to everyone who has supported Westside's 6th grade SLC blanket drive for our local animal shelter as their first community project. For one more week, you can donate gently used blankets in our donation boxes located in the side car loop, front area, or have your child drop it in the Commons! The theme this year is Explorers of the Future
- January 20th - January 25th
- All entries need to be in full color
- All entries must be completed on a white 8.5 x 11 piece of paper
- All characters must adhere to the Westside dress code
- On the back, in pencil, please put your full name, teacher name and grade level
Completed entries are to be turned in to Ms. Johnston in Room 124

Why Should I Apply for Free/Reduced Lunch?
- State and Federal Funding for Schools- Teacher allocations and curriculum materials
- Title 1 Status- Being a Title 1 school provides funding for our Parent Engagement Nights such as our Math Night we hosted first semester and our Science and Literacy Night coming soon...all FREE to families!
- Summer Enrichment Programs- helps students prevent the summer slide or catch up in areas that need support.
- Tutoring Programs
- EBT eligibility
- Discounts on SAT and ACT Testing fees
- Discounts on technology and internet services
