About the Presentation:
This Saturday morning workshop will discuss why students find open response problems so hard. It will also discuss Smarter Balanced problems in this context. An overview of 7 practical strategies on how to lead students into deeper, richer answers will follow.

8:30-9:00: Looking at Common Core Problems (PARCC and SMARTER BALANCED)
and diagnosing possible student difficulties. “Why are Open Response problems so difficult for students?” 7 strategies to improve Open Responses: an overview
9:00-10:00: Strategy 1: Using quick writes as a way to build thinking
Strategy 5: Building Math Vocabulary
Strategy 4: Reading and Understanding the Math Questions
10:15-11:00: Strategy 3: Helping students show thinking and reasoning Ø Strategy 2 and 7: Frequent assessments and using the data
11:00-11:30: Strategy 6: Designing Great Assignments in Math
