About the Presentation:

This Saturday morning workshop will discuss why students find open response problems so hard. It will also discuss Smarter Balanced problems in this context. An overview of 7 practical strategies on how to lead students into deeper, richer answers will follow.


Teachers will be able to use 4-6 simple but powerful strategies to deepen student understanding of math concepts, build engagement, and clearly answer Open Response Questions.


8:30-9:00: Looking at Common Core Problems (PARCC and SMARTER BALANCED)

and diagnosing possible student difficulties. “Why are Open Response problems so difficult for students?” 7 strategies to improve Open Responses: an overview

9:00-10:00: Strategy 1: Using quick writes as a way to build thinking
Strategy 5: Building Math Vocabulary
Strategy 4: Reading and Understanding the Math Questions

10:15-11:00: Strategy 3: Helping students show thinking and reasoning Ø Strategy 2 and 7: Frequent assessments and using the data

11:00-11:30: Strategy 6: Designing Great Assignments in Math

About the Presenter:

Bill Atwood, M.Ed. is a Collins Education Associate who has over 20 years of experience in public and private schools and is a recipient of a Presidential Award for excellence in Math and Science Teaching. His book, How Did You Get That? Improving Open Responses in Math (2011) and a dynamic DVD, Math Words In Motion: Improving Math Vocabulary (2013), describe strategies that improve students’ thinking and writing skills. Bill is a national presenter known for his sense of humor, enthusiasm, and ability to focus on practical ideas that teachers can implement easily. Bill is part of the graduate faculty at Salem State College, Endicott College, and Worcester State College in Massachusetts. Bill lives in Milton, Massachusetts with his wife and three children.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation of registrations should be made in writing.

  • A full refund will be made for cancellations postmarked, or sent via email, 7 days before the event.
  • Partial refunds will be given for requests received 1-6 days before the event.
  • No refunds are given for "no shows" or day of event cancellations.

We do accept substitution of another person at our conference. 24 hours of notification is appreciated.

All registrations are subject to Cancellation/Refund policy.

Cancellations or postponements may occur as a result of low enrollments, weather or presenter circumstances. Registrants are notified using contact information provided through registration and online registrations for the event will be closed
