CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Nov 4-Nov 8, 2019
Hello First Program Community,
Another week where every day had something significant going on! Thank you to all who attended the Fall Assembly last week. Grade 4s did well with facilitating their first assembly and we look forward to them getting even better at it with further experiences.
Tuesday was our 50th day of school - CDS FP Pride Day. Students wore all kinds of great retro CDS gear. Photos will be shared next week.
Wednesday, all of FP visited Oktokki Space Center. We will share a video of this at our next assembly. Photos and a write-up will follow next week.
Our FP PTA supported the Book Fair; as always, we thank them for volunteering their time and effort to make our great school events even better. Thank you to Ms. Choo for creating the opportunity for our students to visit an English book store within the walls of our school. Students and teachers alike now have several titles to quench their thirst for reading!
Coming up - a regular week of school, which we haven’t had in a while!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring PK, Art, and the Halloween events.
PK with Ms.Lee
In social studies, Pre-K students started to explore their family. Last week, students drew their family pictures with labeling. This week after reading books on family members, we discussed what similarities and differences there are between my family and other families. Based on our discussion, we made diagrams to compare families in Pre-K.
Art with Mr. Read
Pre-K students made paper bag witch puppets
Kindergarten students learned printmaking monoprints and styrofoam block prints
1st Grade students painted a birch tree forest using a tape resist technique
2nd Grade students made positive and negative space cut paper Jack O’ Lanterns
3rd Grade students painted a landscape background for their weaving project
4th Grade students made contour drawings of cow skulls with charcoal inspired by artist Georgia O’Keeffe
Afternoon Halloween Activities
Music
Our Halloween activities were a lot of fun! Students learned a chant about Miss White (she had a fright), moved like Halloween creatures to Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” and Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and read a story about five little pumpkins. Good times were had by all!
P.E.
On Thursday, the PK, K and 1 students got to celebrate a little bit of Halloween in the gym. They started off the afternoon with a spooky game of witches tag Next they raided a ghost filled area in search of candy (bean bags) in our game of haunted house. They finished off the afternoon with a scary game of zombie tag. I hope everyone had a magnificent halloween and remembered to eat some healthy vegetables with all of those candies.
Art
For the afternoon activity, students made “Spooky Slime Drawings”, using a paper marbling technique. Follow the link to learn more about paper marbling!
Pajama Day
FP students had so much fun coming to school on Monday, October 28th! Pajama day was a warm invitation to kick off Spirit Week 2019. Everyone came dressed in their comfiest pajamas to discuss healthy sleep and to recognize uniqueness. Students showed a lot of school spirit and community by celebrating Pajama Day!
Twin Day
Wacky Wednesday
On Wednesday, October 30th, students had a Wacky time dressing up for Wear What You Will Wacky Wednesday. On this day, we celebrated diversity and talked about all the things that make us unique - not only on the outside, but on the inside. It was a fantastic day and we all looked amazing!
Trick or Treating
Super Color Day
Haunted House
On Halloween last week the 4th graders put on a spooky haunted house activity for the 2nd and 3rd graders! They put on a great show with spooky music and lots of fun things to touch like witches eyes and werewolf ears and toes! Grade 4 really worked well together! They all had a job to do and really ran a great show! Some students guided the younger kids around while others helped with blindfolds or ran the music! What a great day!
Songdo 7's
On Nov 2nd and 3rd, CDS took part in the annual Songdo 7’s Soccer Jamboree. It is always the biggest event of the year, and this year it didn’t disappoint. This year CDS entered 6 teams (Grade 1 mixed, 2/3 girls, 3 boys, 4/5 girls, 4 boys & 5 boys) into the tournament. The first day saw round robin play with each team playing 3 games. The second day of the event was a little more intense, as the playoffs began and the teams were competing for trophies. All of our teams worked hard and tried their best, but special recognition is due for the Grade 1 team as they finished 2nd and the Grade 2/3 girls team as they finished 3rd in their divisions. Overall it was a fantastic weekend with lots of memorable moments. This was the last event of the season, so students that are looking to keep moving in season 2 will have to consider futsal, floor hockey or ultimate Frisbee.
