Spooky Stations
This Friday students will be participating in a curriculum based celebration. We will have a shorter instructional day so that we can have a little fun. Thank you to all who have sign up to help. The kids are looking forward it.
ELA
ELA: We started a new unit last week. We will be exploring theme, the message or lesson the author wants us to take away. This is a very fun unit with much to explore and discuss. After we finish up with theme we will move on to figurative language later in November.
Being a Writer: We are working on taking a piece of writing through the writing process for the first time. Last week the students got into pairs to share their writing and get peer feedback. We should be able to have a piece ready for publishing by the end of the week. Once we finish the "Writing Process" unit we will start working on writing expository pieces. The "Expository Writing Unit" is a big focus in the 5th grade. We will spend about 6 weeks working in expository writing.
Novel Study: Our class will be starting Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech in the next couple of weeks. There are not enough of these novels for all students to have one. The two classes will have to share one set. This means all novels will remain in the classroom. If you would like for your student to have the option to bring the book home you will need to purchase the book. You can find it on Amazon for $6.00

Social Studies
This 9 weeks students will be completing Chapters 3 & 4 in Social Studies. We will also be completing our 1st DBQ (Data Based Question Project). The kids get to play history detective and search different texts to answer a driving question. The end product is an essay response. We are going to put what we have been practicing in Being a Writer to good use. :o)
Chapter 3: Settlement Takes Root
Over the next month the classes will be exploring how these early settlement started, the challenges they faced, and which ones survived. Our 1st DBQ correlates to this chapter. The DBQ focus on Jamestown and why did so many settler die. This DBQ has been one of the favorites in past years.
The 2nd grading period is the shortest in terms of instructional days. We will be going through these chapters at a little quicker pace. Make sure to watch Edmodo planner for homework, quizzes, and tests.
