Hermann Elementary Bearcat Bulletin
Learn. Lead. Grow. Succeed. Together!
April 3, 2020
THANK YOU FAMILIES
Thank you for working through your child's first AMI learning packet. Hopefully, you were able to complete many of the learning activities together. Thanks, too, for becoming your child's teacher! Would any of you have guessed that we would be working on homeschooling our kids?? It's tough, and the staff at HES wants to support you as much as possible. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions. Teachers are working remotely so they will answer as soon as they are available.
New Learning Packets
Teachers have worked very hard to prepare a new learning packet for our students. Learning packets will be mailed on Monday, April 6. You should receive your packet either Wednesday or Thursday. If you do not have a packet by the end of the week, please call the Hermann Elementary Office. Thank you for beginning to work on the concepts in the packet with your child(ren)!

Notes from our counselor, Mrs. Poehlman
Greetings from the home studies station at my house. I miss seeing all of my young friends each school day! Here are a few points of wisdom that I would like to pass along to you at home. Your children watch and learn from what you do and say. They will model the same behaviors you use in dealing with stress, conflict, relationships, and daily tasks. In an effort to provide positive social-emotional learning through virtual means, I would like to provide families resources focused on social-emotional learning as wraparound support to you. I hope this helps to broaden real-world experiences for your child to put social-emotional skills into practice during this most uncertain time. Focus on connecting with your child and use daily opportunities to help them grow.
Remember to stay calm, listen to your children, and offer reassurance.
Be a role model. Children will react to and follow your example.
Be aware of how you talk about COVID-19. Your words can increase or decrease your child's fear.
Explain social distancing. Children don’t fully understand why they can’t be with friends.
Demonstrate deep breathing. Do breathing exercises with your child to help them calm.
Focus on the positive. Celebrate having more time to spend as a family.
Get outside each day for sunshine and fresh air. Exercise is fantastic to elevate moods.
Establish a daily routine. Keeping a regular schedule provides a sense of control and calm.
Identify projects that might help others. Such as writing letters to loved ones who are isolated.
Offer lots of love and affection.

A note from the Title Team, Mrs. Schebaum and Ms. Brown
We hope this email finds you and your family well! Your child’s classroom teacher has sent home their AMI (Alternative Methods of Instruction) packet with them! Hopefully, they’ve already started working on them and you have found them beneficial in keeping their academic skills sharp. These packets include reading, writing and math activities. The activities are over concepts the classroom teacher and as well as ourselves have taught in class but feel are important enough to have your child continue to work on them throughout school closure. One of the daily expectations included in this packet is to read at least 20 minutes. As Title 1 teachers we can not emphasize the importance of this enough!
Each day we, the Title 1 teachers at Hermann Elementary will email with a “shenanigan” for you and your student to try at home in an effort to make their AMI packet more fun! Please email us if you would like to be added to this daily email.
We know that this time might be overwhelming to families as you help to take on the role of teacher for your child but together we get through this school closure and COVID-19 pandemic.
If you have any questions regarding our “shenanigans” or a concept in your child’s AMI packet, or you wish to give us feedback on our “shenanigans” please feel free to email us at any time.
