IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Please remember if your child is tardy, you must escort your child to the office. Thank you.

5-7 Parents: Students will begin using their lockers on Monday. Procedures and times will be listed on the locker hall doors and reviewed with the students on WSMM.

Upcoming Celebrations & Donation Drives

Unfortunately, this year the COVID virus has put a damper on many of our cherished traditions and activities. As we approach the holiday season, please keep in mind that we will not have our normal Thanksgiving feasts or Christmas parties. Our teachers will plan and coordinate more meaningful activities for the students in their classes. Teachers may ask for donations of small, seasonal, individually wrapped treats for the students to enjoy during their activities. There will be no other food or drink brought on campus.

As promised at the start of the school year, we will not have a large scale fund raiser. We have had a couple of small voluntary fund raisers. The latest being the Holy Diaper Drive. Thank you for your generosity. Our SMM Families have such big hearts.

We will participate in the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and Christmas Toy Drive. These are both voluntary donation drives. No one is required to participate. As we get closer to these events, we will publish the specifics.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and generosity!

Congratulations to SMM October Students of the Month

We recognized SMM October Students of the Month in grades K through 5 on WSMM this week. We will recognize Students of the Month is grades six and seven on Monday.

Students of the Month are selected by their teachers because the students are good role models, great friends to their classmates, work and study hard, and are helpful, kind and caring towards everyone.

THEY SAY IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

We celebrated students who had birthdays during the months of July through October on WSSM these past few weeks. Since we still had to socially distance and maintain our static groups, we did it by homerooms in grades K through 2. Grades 3 through 7 were done by grade level. We will continue to socially distance static groups when they come to the WSMM studio. Students will be expected to wear their masks the entire time. Every few weeks, we will work through the cycle. Here is the schedule for the upcoming week:

On Monday, November 9 - K students with birthdays from September 30 - November 30

On Wednesday, November 11 - 1st graders with birthdays from September 30 - November 30

On Thursday, November 12 - 2nd graders with birthdays from October 11 - November 30

On Monday, November 16 - 3rd graders with birthdays in November

On Tuesday, November 17 - 4th graders with birthdays in November

On Wednesday, November 18 - 5th graders with birthdays in November

No 6th grade birthdays to recognize at this time

On Thursday, November 19 - 7th graders with birthdays from November 7 - 30

TEACHER FEATURE: Megan Walker

Big picture

Hi, My Name Is Megan Walker and This Is My Story

I was born and raised in Slidell. I am a proud SMM graduate. I attended Pope John Paul II High School and Southeastern Louisiana University where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Education. I have been teaching for 7 years and this is my second year at SMM. I teach Middle School ELA and Reading. I am also the moderator of NJHS and the Cheer Team.

As a student at SMM, Mrs. Norma Ladner inspired me to teach middle school. She taught 7th and 8th grade Social Studies and had the most understanding, calm, respectable personality. I knew then that my goal in life was to be a teacher at SMM in her classroom. A lot of people ask me, "Why junior high?" Junior high is an important time in life and I love working with students during that time where they need some of the most support. They're old enough to know but still young enough to still want to talk to you. Each class I've ever taught has stayed with me and I learn so much more from them than I could ever teach.

When I am not at SMM, I'm always with my friends and family. Whether it's on the water in the boat, or on the couch watching movies, I'm always with people. I love crafting and working with vinyl projects or shopping around town. I am married to Hunter, a veteran, and we have one son, Nicholas, and one fur-baby. I am currently in graduate school pursuing my Master's degree. I am also a local real estate agent. I like to stay busy, but will always take a break for chips and salsa!

My favorite thing about SMM is its "magical" community. It's so hard to explain, but the sense of tradition, faith, and pride just overflows as soon as you step on campus.
