The Fairview Connection
MAY 5, 2023
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
We’ve had another full and exciting week! On Monday, our students had the privilege of learning from author Brian Selznick during a whole school assembly where he shared all about his experiences as an author and illustrator. His sense of humor and engaging personality were a great match for our students, and they learned a lot about the importance of perseverance. Special thanks to LRC director, Cindy Larson, for making the connection for this to happen and to our PTO for sponsoring the visit. Students worked hard on their MAP assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday and their reading benchmark assessment today. We appreciate their efforts! Finally, our 5th graders had their famous egg drop activity this morning where they engineered a container for their egg with the aim of keeping it from breaking. Then our friends from the Mount Prospect Fire Department dropped their creations from the top of the hook and ladder truck to test out their designs. We had a wide range of success, but whether the design worked or not, our students learned a lot! Please take some time to read through today’s newsletter for important updates related to the days and weeks ahead. In addition, click this link to see this past week’s edition of the FES News from the Fairview Media Club. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Fine Arts Night: Next week on Thursday, May 11th, we are holding our annual Fine Arts Night! This event is an open house from 5:30-7:00 pm where families can walk the Fairview halls viewing the wonderful artwork students have created this year, visit the LRC to shop at the Spring Book Fair (see this link for more Book Fair details), and stop by the Multi-Purpose Room to purchase an ice cream treat. Then at 7:00 pm, we will hold our Spring Chorus concerts in the gym. We hope you are able to attend!
Staff Appreciation Week: Next week is our annual Staff Appreciation Week! The PTO has a fun week planned for the Fairview Staff starting Monday, and is inviting all of you to participate. Please see this link for more details on how you can be involved! Thank you for your continued support! It is an honor to be a part of a school community that is invested in and appreciative of the work we are doing as a school.
Field Day: On Wednesday, May 24th, we will be holding our annual Field Day (May 25th is the rain date). In order to have a successful Field Day, we need your help! Please consider signing up to lead a station by filling out this form by Friday, May 12th. You can help for the whole day or take an AM or PM shift. Once we have our list of volunteers, we will send a separate email to sign up for which station you would like to help with. Thank you so much for considering helping out on Field Day! It is always one of our students’ favorite days of the school year, and we couldn’t pull it all off without you!
Andy’s Frozen Custard: As a special treat to celebrate the end of the school year, our wonderful PTO is bringing in Andy’s Frozen Custard for our students to enjoy on Friday, May 26th. In order for your child to participate, you will need to provide permission using this form. We will make accommodations if your child has an allergy that would permit them from enjoying the treat, so we are asking that all families please fill out the form by Friday, May 12th (one per Fairview child in your household).
Fun Fair: Our PTO Fun Fair is coming up on Friday, May 19th! This is an amazing event for our Fairview community, and we hope you are able to join us between 4:00-7:00 pm. For more information about the Fun Fair, click on the links included in the newsletter below.
Parent Feedback for Next School Year: As we get closer to the end of the year, the Fairview staff will complete the sectioning process for next school year. This process consists of teachers carefully analyzing student needs and creating balanced class lists for the following school year. There are several factors that are considered when creating balanced class lists. Students are placed so that they have a cluster of other peers with them that learn at their same academic levels to ensure an appropriate peer group exists for small-group instruction. Teachers carefully consider the types of support that each student needs when generating balanced class lists as well. Once each grade level team has created class lists that are balanced and make sense from an instructional standpoint, I carefully analyze each list and assign a homeroom teacher. I may make a small number of changes to the teacher-created lists if needed. I’d like to invite you as parents to take a part in this process, as you know your child best. If you’d like to share your feelings about the learning environment that will best suit your child’s learning needs, please fill out the form found at this link. DO NOT SPECIFICALLY REQUEST TEACHERS BY NAME. Such requests will not be honored. Rather than stating the teacher you want, provide me with information about your son or daughter and how you feel they learn most effectively. I will read through every feedback form I receive carefully and take your input into account when making final teacher assignments. Please submit this form no later than Friday, May 5th. If you have more than one child who will attend Fairview next school year, please fill out the form separately for each child.
Please contact Julie Manis (jmanis@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
