Madison Memos

The Madison School Newsletter / August 25, 2017

Welcome to another school year at Madison! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer. Thank you to Shelly Baker and Julie Schulz for last week’s Meet & Treat. It was so fun catching up with friends after summer break.

We are very excited about the year ahead - continuing the Madison traditions of Multicultural Day, Winter Carnival, Pancake Breakfast, and Explore More Day. In addition, we hope that your children can be involved in the PTA sponsored clubs - Battle of the Books, Math Club, Chess Club, and The Conservation Committee.

We could not put on these amazing events and extra-curricular activities without some fundraising. Our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Run-a-Thon, will be held September 20 and September 21 (Sept. 25 rain date) and our adults-only fundraiser, Trivia Night, will be on Saturday, October 21. Please consider contributing to both these efforts as every dollar raised goes back to the students at Madison (contributions are tax deductible).

Have you joined the PTA? Becoming a member is the easiest way to support our PTA. A family membership is $15 and includes access to our mobile directory app, Directory Spot. Please visit the Madison PTA website, www.madisonschoolpta.org and click-on “Join PTA” to become a member. Register for band and orchestra

Did you know that the District 200 instrumental music program is known throughout Illinois for its excellence?

During the first 2 weeks of school, 5th graders will see, hear, and try out the instruments offered for instruction. Families will have a chance to meet the directors, ask questions, rent instruments, purchase lesson books, and register students for band or orchestra. Registration nights are at Hubble and Monroe Middle Schools on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at Edison and Franklin Middle Schools on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Feel free to drop in; allow about a half hour. The busiest times are from 5:00 to 6:30, when it may take a little longer.

If parents cannot attend these sessions, please contact the band or orchestra teacher from your school. Further information may also be available on teacher classroom pages on school websites. Students younger than 5th grade may also participate in large group rehearsals if they take private lessons outside of school. There is an $80 fee for elementary band or orchestra participation; this is adjusted for students who qualify for exempt or reduced fees.

Please contact the instructor for more information! The band director at Madison is Mike Klos at michael.klos@cusd200.org and the string orchestra director is Natasha Alley at natasaha.alley@cusd200.org.

We hope to see you at registration night!

Battle of the Books volunteers needed

Madison's Battle of the Books program will begin the week of Labor Day. Now that your kids are in fourth and fifth grade, it's harder to find volunteer opportunities where you can actually work with your child. Battle of the Books is a fun way to be with your child and get to know other fourth and fifth graders. Battle meets weekly during the recess portion of the lunch hour. Team up with a few of your friends and rotate weeks, or be with your group each week--the choice is yours. Each group reads 12-13 books. See the full list here. If you're interested in this wonderful opportunity, please email Janet Mathis today, janetmarkmathis@yahoo.com.

Sign up your fourth/fifth grader for Battle TODAY

If your fourth or fifth grader would like to try Battle of the Books this year, please sign them up today. Here is the flyer that went home this week with more information. Please email Janet Mathis with your child's name, grade and teacher, and please let her know if you can volunteer: janetmarkmathis@yahoo.com.

LLC volunteers needed

Our Library Learning Center (LLC) is in need of your support. We are seeking volunteers in both the morning (9:15 a.m.-12 p.m.) and afternoon (1 - 3:30 p.m.) sessions. Mrs. Graham, our LLC Director, couldn't have the program she has today without your help. Your time is appreciated no matter how often you volunteer, be it every week, every other week, or once a month. Volunteering in the library is a special way parents and grandparents can share in their child's school day. Some of the LLC volunteering activities include shelving, checking materials in and out, preparing displays and bulletin boards, and assisting students and faculty. If you are interested in volunteering in the Madison library, please contact Kathryn Medanic at llcvolunteers@madisonschoolpta.org. Thank you for your consideration!!
