The OPA Team wants to thank everyone who attended our third Professional Career Development Workshop, "Interview Smarts," this past Friday, October 13, and everyone who made it possible.
We will have our fourth workshop, "Jumpstart your Grant Proposal," on October 24, and it will be followed by the "Teaching Portfolio" workshop on November 13.

Teaching Portfolio | Registration Deadline: November 3
The Teaching Portfolio is best thought of as a documented statement of a faculty member's teaching responsibilities, philosophy, goals and accomplishments as a teacher. It is a flexible document, and can be used in a number of ways, depending upon the needs and interests of the faculty member. It can be an extensive collection of information, or something much more compact and limited. The essential structure and elements to be included will be presented.

Jumpstart your Grant Proposal | Grant Proposal Writing Workshop Series, Part 1
Are you a postdoc looking to get started on a fellowship or grant application? This workshop will help you lay the foundation of your proposal. We will conduct writing activities and peer conversation exercises that will help you jumpstart your application. Bring your laptop and a ready-to-write spirit!
The structure of this workshop is to review with participants some of the key elements that comprise effective grant proposal: research question, hypothesis, literature review, methods, work plan, etc. Each of these categories will be briefly discussed, then participants will have a chance to free-write material that will serve as the building blocks that can be flushed out into a full proposal.

Ethics in Biomedical Research Workshop: October 23-27

We are inviting faculty, students and postdocs to “Ethics in Biomedical Research Workshop” organized by Rutgers School of Graduate Studies and Rutgers Global.
The workshop will be held from Monday October 23rd to Friday October 27th, 2017. The schedule of talks is attached at the end of this newsletter.
The educational goal of the workshop is to ensure uniformity in bioethical practices among collaborating institutions so that scientists from these collaborating institutions can apply for international as well as US/NIH grants.
Attending this workshop will be faculty representatives from universities around the world, including Brazil, Croatia, Dominican Republic, India and Indonesia.

Every other year, the NYU School of Medicine hosts What Can You Be with a PhD?, the largest career symposium in the country, and this year is going to be amazing!
We have 25 sessions scheduled over two days, Saturday November 4th and Sunday November 5th.

Friendsgiving | 2017 Thanksgiving Dinner Program

The Center for Global Services’ International Friendship Program (IFP) is seeking volunteers from the Rutgers and New Brunswick-area communities for our Holiday Dinner Program. The program provides an opportunity for international students and scholars to experience Thanksgiving, as well as to create an opportunity for Rutgers and local community members to invite international guests to their home. Our goal is for participants to share in friendship and cross-cultural learning through this traditional American holiday.
We will be accepting host applications until October 29th. We will provide you with information regarding the international guest(s) assigned to your family on or around November 10th.

Welcome & Information Session
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs offers Welcome and Information Sessions to help orient new and current postdocs. If you are a postdoc who is new to Rutgers, or just curious about the resources that are available to you, we strongly encourage you to register for an upcoming one-hour session.
Next session will be on September 29th. Please register as space is limited.

Nominations Being Accepted for the 2018 Mentor Award | Deadline: November 21
The award recognizes a faculty member or advisor who has engaged in exceptional mentoring of postdoctoral scholars as exhibited by the following:
- Has advocated for postdoctoral scholars.
- Has been accessible and provided open lines of communication to postdoctoral scholars.
- Has created a supportive environment for research; has shown respect for the postdoctoral scholars' goals and assisted them in fulfilling those goals.
- Has provided them guidance in professional development, including, for example, encouraging the use of the Core Competencies for self-assessment and guidance, completing an individual development plan, and assisting the postdoctoral scholars in building a professional network through generous sharing of contacts.
- Has demonstrated a sustained commitment to creating a productive working environment that enhances the overall postdoctoral experience.
The recipient of the NPA Garnett-Powers & Associates, Inc. Mentor Award will receive a plaque, an honorarium of $500, complimentary registration to the 2018 Annual Meeting, and a $1,000 travel stipend. The award will be presented at the 16th NPA Annual Conference, April 6-8, 2018.
Last year’s Garnett-Powers & Associates, Inc. Mentor Award recipient was Malene Hansen, Ph.D., associate professor in the Program for Development, Aging and Regeneration at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP), a nonprofit research institute located in San Diego, CA.
