Taylor Swift

Growing Up

Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989 in her hometown of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. She grew up on a Christmas tree farm with her parents, Scott and Andrea, and her younger brother Austin. She rode Quarter horses and performed in musical theater shows at the age of nine. At age 10 Swift was already starting to learn how to play guitar. At age 12 a computer repairman showed her how to play three cords on the guitar and she wrote her first song "Lucky You." She moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams at the age of fourteen. She was granted a record deal with RCA, but she soon walked away from that deal at the age of 15 due to the label not allowing her to write her own songs.

Rising to Fame and Accomplishments

Taylor went to a showcase at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and caught the attention of Scott Borchetta who worked for Dreamworks Records and was preparing to form Big Machine Records as his own independent label. He signed Taylor to the label and in October of 2006, Swift released her first album 'Taylor Swift'. The album sold 39,000 copies in its first week. She also released an EP called 'Beautiful Eyes'. In 2008 she released her second album Fearless. The single from the album 'Love Story' became the second best selling country single of all time. Struggles Along the Way

In school, Taylor struggled to find where she fit in. She was made fun of by people in her school for liking country music and she didn't really have any friends. She eased her pain by writing music and poems and hanging out with her parents. Also recently, Taylor's mom Andrea was diagnosed with cancer. Taylor wrote a paragraph about it on her website and while singing a song she wrote for a little boy who passed away from cancer she told the crowd of a 1989 show about her mom. At the MTV Music Awards Taylor was accepting her award for her single 'You Belong With Me' when rapper Kanye West interrupted her and said that Beyonce's music video was "one of the best music videos of all time." Kanye reportedly also wrote a song for an upcoming album called 'Famous' and in the song he claims he is the reason Taylor is famous. How did Taylor get through these hard times? While accepting her Grammy, Swift confronted the situation of Kanye claiming he made her famous by stating, "There will be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or fame, but if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you someday when you get where you're going you'll know it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world." Swift also said that while in school "People haven't been there for me but music always has." Swift focused on her career and got through hard times by surrounding herself with people who are caring and she also focused on her family.
