Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
The teachers read the The Quiltmaker's Gift and Extraordinary Mary's Ordinary Deed to discuss how one person could make a difference by simply helping someone. The goal was to have the students make a difference by donating something that is important to them.
On Nov. 1st, Second Grade students had a "candy day" and experienced the following activities:
- separated the chocolate from the other candy (per Operation Gratitude request).
- estimated how much they collected
- determined the most efficient way to count
- counted the candy
- wrote equations to add up the total
- sorted candy by vowel sounds and made a chart.
- wrote an opinion writing piece about their favorite candy.
- wrote a reflection about how they felt about giving candy.
This week students learned about Veteran's Day and wrote a friendly letter to soldiers that will be sent with the candy. Our 2nd Grade students brought in 4,030 pieces of candy this year. I am so proud of our children's kindness and willingness to make a positive difference in someone's life.
https://opgrat.wordpress.com/2013/07/18/halloween-candy-for-the-troops/. According to Operation Gratitude's blog, last year they received and distributed a record-setting 533,891 pounds.
I look forward to seeing all of you tonight at our very first Fitness Night!
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgarnder
