I-Ready Testing:
We had a great first week of I-Ready Testing. Our preliminary data shows huge gains across all three grade levels in English-Language Arts. This week students will be taking the Math Diagnostic on Monday and Tuesday in Math and Science classes. Students will have extra time to complete the assessment in their elective classes if needed. Students who meet grade level proficiency (Green) on the diagnostic will be exempt from taking the exam in late May.
Please remind students to do their best and to bring their own earbuds (if possible) during the assessment days.

California Junior Scholarship Foundation (CJSF):
CJSF is an organization for 7th and 8th graders with good grades and citizenship. Applications will be in the office on the B side starting this Friday, January 12th. Students should fill out the application, attach their report card with comments and turn it in to Ms. Montoya in D-6. The application deadline is January 25th. We meet on Thursdays from 2:45-3:30. Our first meeting will be on January 25th in D-6, where we will be electing our officers. If a student qualifies and cannot come to our Thursday meetings, they should still apply and be an inactive member. Our main focus is to do service projects and have fun together. Students should check out the display case by the B side of the office and get an idea of the type of projects we work on.
8th Grade Parent Ad in 2018 Yearbook-
There are several ad spaces left in the 2018 Yearbook for 8th grade parents to commemorate their child’s last year at Sequoia. The cost of the color ad is $35 and includes a photo or photos and a message from the parents. If interested, please contact Mrs. Amerson as soon as possible at 682-8000 ext. 5675 or via email at amersonl@mdusd.org
Career Day 2018!
On March 14th we will be holding our 5th Annual Career Day, when over 40 presenters will present to Sequoia students on a wide-range of professions. Career Day is a student favorite and a great way to be involved with Sequoia Middle School.
Career Day Presenters: Do you have a job you would be willing to talk about with our students? Perhaps a friend of family member has an interesting career and is great with 11-14 year olds? Open the attached Presenter Letter and Presenter Form to get more details about this fun and rewarding experience. Forms can be turned into the PFC box in the main office. (Attached Below)

Counseling/Character Education
New years give us all an opportunity to pause, reflect, and evaluate. Take a moment to ponder….
What brought you joy this year? What was hard this year? Who helped you when it was hard? What did you learn?
The character trait for January is INTEGRITY, and asking these kinds of questions helps build your sense of character, values, and, indeed, integrity.
One of the best things you can do with your student is to discuss your family values. This helps to build their sense of what integrity is and how it can help them to stand up for what they believe. We want all our Sequoia students to be STRONG in character!
To help foster integrity throughout campus we have signs displaying integrity—with the concept of “doing the right thing, even when no one is watching”. These signs are in every classroom and all common areas. Our students are engaging in dialogue and discussions in the classrooms, and monthly activities are scheduled during lunch to help promote integrity in all they do.
