MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! I have enjoyed a wonderful week of visiting our schools, connecting with our staff and students and seeing their excitement for the school year. We have a great year planned for our students, full of opportunities for new adventures and achievements.
I would like to thank our staff, families and community members for ensuring this week has been full of love and support for our kids as our region once again experiences the pain of wildfires and smoky skies. I am always heartened by the way this community comes together in challenging times, and the past few days have been no exception.
This community has a heart of service, and that is reflected in the Strategic Plan our district has adopted to best educate and nurture our students. The shared goal of our School Board, our district leaders and our entire staff is to ensure students receive the care, support and instruction needed to graduate from high school with plans for their most successful futures.
This school year will see a strong emphasis on improving literacy and math scores, getting our graduation rates back up to record levels, and providing our students with the skills they will need as young adults entering the workforce or continuing their educational journeys.
Our children are our community’s most precious assets. By investing in their futures, we are investing in Roseburg’s future. These are exciting times in the Roseburg School District, and I invite you to follow along in this monthly newsletter. You can also stay up to date on our website, www.roseburg.k12.or.us, and our social media platforms. I look forward to sharing the amazing stories and experiences of our students and staff this year.
Sincerely,
Jared Cordon
Superintendent

COMMUNITY PARTNER SHOUT-OUTS
UCC partnership will clear pathways to careers
An assistant principal at Roseburg High School has been named the first-ever P-20 Pathways Innovator, a joint position collaboratively created by Umpqua Community College and Roseburg Public Schools to ensure clear pathways for students transitioning from education to the workforce.
Brett Steinacher has been an assistant principal at RHS since August 2015. He begins his new role as P-20 Pathways Innovator this school year. Steinacher will work to better align RHS’s career and technical education programs with the additional training and educational opportunities, especially those in technical trades, manufacturing, and healthcare fields, offered through UCC. In addition, he’ll work with local industry employers to develop pathways in in-demand industries and ensure that credentials offered in the pathway have labor-market value.
Steinacher said the new role presents an exciting opportunity for students, families and the community.
“Our purpose in developing this program is with a focus on inspiring our youngsters by opening their minds to the possibilities of careers and life pathways, igniting their passions through the middle grades, and providing the most relevant and innovative career training and education pathways from the high school and the college directly into our community businesses and industries,” he said. “I am excited for what the future holds for our students and community.”
Free meals and free books for kids
Our Nutrition Services Department served up around 8,600 free breakfast and lunch meals to children and youth over the summer! Special thanks to Roseburg Public Library for making our free summer meal program extra special with free books for kids! Library staff followed the Lunchbox Express around on Mondays during the break and allowed children to select a free book and an activity craft kit.
District welcomes School Resource Deputy
Roseburg School District is excited to welcome School Resource Deputy Justin Moe to our schools this year. We are grateful to partner with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for this extra security presence and support. Deputy Moe grew up in Oakridge, Oregon, and attended Umpqua Community College. He began working full time for DCSO in 2020.
Deputy Moe says: “I believe my duty as a School Resource Deputy is the responsibility of safety and crime prevention in school with the utmost importance of protecting our children. To educate and mentor in a manner of virtue. Lastly, to imprint a positive impact that will last for generations to come in our youth. To me, this truly hits home with my two beautiful girls and my amazing wife.”
