AVONDALE MIDDLE SCHOOL!

Hello AMS Families!

I hope everyone is getting outside and enjoying the weather while it lasts! It is that time of year, yes that’s right…Report cards! Teachers are finalizing grades on Tuesday Nov. 24th. Please make sure your student is turning in their work to get that last boost to their grade if they need it. Parents will receive an email on Friday, November 27th regarding how to view their child’s report card when they are released during the week of Nov. 30th.

As we approach Thanksgiving, please remain safe and cognizant of the protective measures you can control for yourself to prevent any spread of Covid-19. Every little bit helps to achieve our goal to return to in-seat instruction. Thank you for the support and resilience of the Avondale parents, students, and staff.

AMS “Updating the Town” Town Hall

I will be hosting a Town Hall on Wednesday Dec. 2nd @ 7pm for AMS parents.

The topics for this town hall are:

· Provide information on in-seat and remote options that we are discussing for return to learn

· Provide a brief overview of an upcoming AMS parent survey

· Provide information on upcoming athletic and fitness opportunities

Dates for return to learn will not be discussed at this meeting.

That determination will be made by the school board and Dr. Schwarz based on

Oakland County Health Dept. recommendations.

SMILE!!! YOU SHOULD BE ON CAMERA!

AMS staff has been noticing a small dip in students keeping their cameras on in ZOOM. Cameras are to remain on during class at all times. When cameras are off, students become less engaged in the lesson, which is why we have changed our policy on requiring students to have their cameras on. The AMS staff will be updating our Camera policy for the 2nd trimester to ensure we are able to increase your student’s engagement in the virtual lessons.

Social/ Emotional Supports for AMS Students

Amy Dagenais is the Transitional Coach at Avondale Middle School. She is currently providing support for a variety of students during this difficult time of COVID-19 and virtual learning.

If your child is...

· Feeling overwhelmed or stressed

· Worried due to the pandemic or virtual learning

· Having a difficult time staying focused, organized, or paying attention to virtual lessons

· Feeling lonely or isolated

· Being impacted in any way by COVID-19 or virtual learning

Please reach out to amy.dagenais@avondaleschools.org for information on how she can assist your child.

The Transitional Coach Program offers student support in an engaging, interactive way in the form of small peer groups. The Transitional Coach Program is a student engagement opportunity, providing an at-home and school based blended motivational support system to promote student success. The Transition Coach is a trained counselor who will help your child improve their experiences at school and at home, temporarily virtually. The Transitional Coach Program is offering a variety of group topics for students to sign up for, including (but not limited to): stress/anxiety, goals/motivation, organization, and social interaction. Groups are currently held twice per week, for about 20 minutes through Zoom. Individual meetings are also offered for individualized support. If you would like to sign your child up for the Transitional Coach Program or would like to request further information, please reach out to this email at amy.dagenais@avondaleschools.org.

AMS Sports Updates

Based on the Oakland County health guidelines and increased numbers of middle schools cancelling winter sports, AMS is unfortunately going to cancel sports for Winter 1. It is our intention to offer some intermural, sports conditioning, and sport specific activities.

These fitness opportunities will be intended for all students to integrate socialization, physical activity, teamwork, and some sport specific training. As we develop this program, I will continue to send out updates on offerings and projected times.

THANKSGIVING RECESS-NO SCHOOL

November 25, 2020-November 27, 2020

Student Council Gift of Giving

This time of year our Student Council takes a very active role in helping to provide gifts for Avondale children to brighten their holidays through the Gift of Giving Program. This year, there are 483 of our Avondale children in need, and Avondale Middle School Student Council has “adopted” 31 children to help. Each child will get “high-need” items (like boots, coats, shoes, pants, etc.) and one toy or “want” type of gift.

I will be purchasing all of these items using Student Council funds. Typically we have multiple fundraising activities during November and December to raise this money. This year, given that we are remote we will be having a contest to see who can raise the most money via our PayPal link. This link will be open through December 11th and all proceeds will go to supporting our Gift of Giving efforts. Our goal this year is to raise $3,000. If every AMS student donated $2.00 we would be almost halfway to our goal.

If donating for a student, please put their name and the name of their Round Up teacher. We are asking for all of the help we can get. Please feel free to share this post on your page. If we exceed our goal we will be able to support more families.

Thank you for all you do to help others over the holidays!
