Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School

February 12, 2021

We hope you and your family are staying warm with all of this winter weather we are experiencing! Despite the snow days and delays, things keep marching along at BWHS. This week we sent out our Virtual 8th Grade Orientation for the Class of 2025. This can also be found on our high school website if you have an incoming freshman for next year.

Additionally, we have a few important dates coming up. First, a reminder there is NO SCHOOL THIS MONDAY, due to the Presidents' Day holiday. Second, our juniors will be taking the ACT on Tuesday, February 23. Students in grades 9, 10 and 12 will not report that day. (See information below.)

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.

ACT Given on February 23

The state mandated ACT test will be given to all juniors on Tuesday, February 23. We will give the test at BWHS this year for the first time in many years and only juniors will attend school that day. This is largely due to the safety protocols in place this year due to COVID at both BWHS and our usual testing locations. Juniors will report at 7:40am and go to their assigned testing location. They will need a calculator and several wooden pencils for the test. When the test is over, they will have lunch and will complete career assessments and activities for the remainder of the day. If you have any questions, please contact the main office.

*If we should have a snow day on 2/23, we will follow the same schedule and test on March 9, 2021.

Panorama Survey

During the next several weeks all Big Walnut students (PreK-12) will be taking a Panorama Survey. Panorama is a web based assessment platform for measuring Social Emotional Skills. It brings together social-emotional learning, a multi-tiered system of support, school climate, and student voice—all in one platform. The results of this survey will not be tied directly to students; the only identifier will be the students' grade level and current learning option (VLP or In-Person). Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Scheduling Information for 2021-2022

Believe it or not, scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year has started! We encourage all parents/guardians to have a conversation with their student(s) to discuss their future and what courses will help them accomplish their goals. To help you with that process, we have a variety of resources available. To access the video that was shown to students in preparation for scheduling, please click here. For more information on the courses offered at BWHS, you can access the BWHS Program of Studies. Students were given a packet with information on graduation requirements and a listing of offered courses. If you have any questions, please feel free to see the scheduling tab on the School Counseling website, or contact the School Counseling office.

*When meeting with their counselor to schedule, students need to have chosen 5 courses for each semester.

FFA News

On Tuesday evening, senior Kaelyn Lortz participated in the Sub-District Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE against students from schools in Delaware, Marion, and Morrow Counties. In this event, students draw a topic at random and have 30 minutes to prepare a speech on that topic. The student then presents their speech to a panel of judges and answers questions pertaining to the drawn issue.

Kaelyn placed first in this event and has earned the opportunity to represent our sub-district at the District 6 contest next week. Excellent job, Kaelyn and congratulations on stepping up to conquer one of the country’s biggest fears!
