GATE Professional Development 19-20
GATE Certification!
Want to begin or continue the process for GATE Certification? Is it time to recertify? Looking for some new ideas to challenge all students? This is for you!
Requirements for Certification
To become GATE certified at PUSD, teachers must participate in 30 hours of professional development and lesson development. The goal is to not only receive researched based strategies in meeting the needs of gifted and talented learners, but also to apply these strategies in current practice. Once certified, teachers must update their certification (re-certify) every 3 years. If teachers have missed two rounds (6 years) of re-certification, they must “restart” by attending 30 hours of PD.
Recertification options (if within 6 years):
Differentiation 201, or
Attend a set of module classes
Another approved program (University classes or outside PD)
Certification:
Attend all module certification classes listed below
Complete an additional 10 hours of lesson development
Induction classes focused on GATE serve as additional hours
Upon completion, you may receive two (2) salary credits

Course Descriptions
Course Descriptions
Differentiation 101: In this learning session, we will explore the social, emotional, and cognitive characteristics of gifted learners and how we might respond to these attributes in the classroom. The key elements of the GATE standards (depth, complexity, novelty, and acceleration) will be introduced. Frameworks and resources will be provided to enable you to begin to dig in to layering critical and creative thinking, big ideas, and interdisciplinary connections into your existing lessons.
Differentiation 201: How might we deepen our application of depth, complexity, novelty and acceleration in our current practice? Explore and apply a scope and sequence for GATE differentiation that parallels your current content while layering in researched best practices for
GATE learners. These sessions will be inquiry based and responsive to the needs and interests of the participants.
Learning Modules
Module 1: Developing Depth of Knowledge through Inquiry
Explore the many and varied ways in which the prompts of depth and complexity can be used to develop analytical questions across content areas
Practice researched pedagogical models to integrate a culture of inquiry in interdisciplinary or discipline specific lessons with differentiated objectives.
Module 2: Growth mindset for Gifted: Building scholarly dispositions through the “practices”
How do we develop intellectual struggle for our GATE students? How might we allow for, manage, and promote parallel inquiry based study on a topic?
Explore scholarly behaviors and how to promote a growth mindset in your classroom through the study of scholars past and present
Make connections between the Standards for Math Practice (CCSS), the Capabilities of Literate Individual (CCSS & H/SS), the Science & Engineering Practices (NGSS), and the Artistic Processes (National Core Art Standards)
Unpack the idea of “Thinking like a Disciplinarian” in order to allow for differentiation in perspective during a unit of study.
Module 3: Igniting Readers and Writers Workshop for Gifted Students
The groups are levelled, isn’t that enough?
How might I include interest based independent study in workshop?
What does conferencing look like for my advanced writers?
Integrate strategies for guided reading and daily 5 to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of diverse learners.
Module 4: Digging for depth and complexity in STEM
How does “3 dimensional learning” in the NGSS parallel with the GATE standards?
Explore the use of critical and creative thinking skills as tools for differentiation and problem solving, and develop rigorous science and math experiences.
Integrate concept mapping and science notebooking techniques as differentiated assessment tools
All courses will be taught by Dr. Michelle McGuire, GATE Specialist; and Karen Anderson, Arts & Enrichment Coordinator
