Transformed
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
~Romans 12:2
Principal's Message
Thankful for Children... and their Homework?
A colleague recently shared a research article with me titled “Don’t Help Your Kids With Their Homework.” The title caught my eye both as someone in professional education, and as a parent of two children who are now twenty-five and twenty-two.
I recall countless evenings of helping my kids review their work, often times wondering ‘what is the point.’ It was often very challenging for me to not ‘just do it’ and move things along for them, even though I knew better. I knew that the struggle was as important as the content being taught. I knew from my formal teacher training that children learn as much, if not more, from struggling with concepts and being challenged, as they do by being given the ‘correct’ answer. Nonetheless, the temptation to jump in and ‘rescue’ my children was great. One strategy that seemed to help me find common ground in my own mind was to get my kids to step back a bit and ask questions about their homework. Such as: What didn’t they know and what did they know about the problem? Why they thought the concept was being taught? What if I just did their work for them, what would really happen in their lives? To my surprise, teachers shared with me that my children sometimes also asked similar questions of the teachers in class. This led to interesting conversations, and more often than not, they completed their homework themselves and earned their own grades.
Based on my experience, I believe children need the love and understanding of parents to support them throughout life. The article referenced above, shared findings that indicate that one powerful type of parental involvement is when parents go to great lengths to seek out effective schools for their children, while others accept the status quo at the school around the corner. I know that RHLS parents have gone to great lengths to seek out RHLS as a school of choice for their child, this is a choice and form of parental involvement that will have lasting effects, eternally lasting effects.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I am thankful for children and their homework. Thankful to have the opportunity to be challenged by both children and their homework. More so, thankful for a community of Christian believers here at Red Hill Lutheran Church and School who together form a foundation of support and encouragement to live for Christ each and every day.
Faith Familes
Faith Families is small group time that integrates all grades (Kindergarten through 8th) fostering friendships and community at RHLS. Each month "Faith Families" meet to pray together, learn about the needs of the world, and discuss our monthly philanthropy & Bible verse.
These small groups provide biblical based discussions, prayer, and encouragement to our students. They gain support from a variety of students in different grade levels all year long.

Tustin Tiller Days Parade: 1st Place Winners!
Thank you to everyone for their support in making this years Tustin Tiller Days Parade Float, a 1st place winner! This year's float was designed by RHLS Art Teacher Mrs. Carla Chun and brought to life by many parents (special artistic design/visioning by Mrs. Vera Jirjis) and students. The final touches were added to the float on Friday, October 5th, at our Families First event 'Float & Glow' night, the night before the big parade day. This event featured Root Beer Floats and Glow Sticks, while games and music were enjoyed by all.
Thank you to our amazing Praise Band under the direction of Mr. Isaiah Coughran (featured trumpeter, Mr. Ben Hunter), and the new Praise & Movement Team under the direction of Ms. Deana Occhipinti.
Also, thank you to RHLS Parent, Mr. Kale Darling, who generously donated his big rig and flat bed to make all this possible.
In addition to sharing the Gospel message and theme of Transformed, based on Romans 12.2, with many residents and friend along the Tustin Tiller Days Parade route through Old Tustin the float took the 1st Place trophy this year! Next stop, Pasadena and the Rose Parade!

This year we want to not only nominate and honor the best teachers, but also the best instructional assistants, custodians, office workers, technicians, and other non-teaching staff members. Thanks for your consideration of this opportunity to recognize RHLS top teachers and school employees who assist them.

"All is Calm, All is Bright" November 30th Concert
All is Calm, All is Bright. Before the hustle and bustle of this busy season begins, join us for a calm evening with Christmas carols and dessert to get your hearts and minds focused on the real reason for the season.
RHLS is hosting our first ever Christmas Carol and Dessert Night. You will hear our students perform orchestral and choral Christmas music and you will even get to participate in a festive sing along. This event has predetermined assigned seating, so the doors will open right at 6:30 pm as the event begins. You will enjoy Christmas background music as Singspiration singers escort you to your seats. Once everyone is seated we will begin the evening with String Orchestra before dismissing tables to the dessert buffet. We will then continue the evening with a performance by Singspiration. Ending the night we will have a joyous sing along before finishing the evening with everyone in the room glorifying our Savior with the Christmas classic, Silent Night. Come celebrate the start of Advent with Singspiration and our String Orchestra.
Preschool News
Thanksgiving Feast
Wednesday, November 14th we will be celebrating Thanksgiving at Preschool with a Thanksgiving Student Feast. Our teachers will be retelling the story of the very first Thanksgiving Feast with the Pilgrims and the Native Americans (our Pilgrims and Native Americans will be represented by our students). For lunch that day, we will come together as a preschool community in prayer, therefore, no packed lunch is necessary on November 14th, unless you know your child will not partake in our Thanksgiving menu and/or there is an allergy concern. Our awesome room parents will be organizing the larger portions of the feast food while the children will be preparing their smaller feast items in their classrooms. They will be engaged in the washing, cutting, and preparing a smaller portion of the actual food. We are inviting all our preschoolers to attend the Thanksgiving Feast but, due to limited space and since we are coming together as a "whole preschool" we ask that only the scheduled volunteers and the Tuesday/Thursday parents (a licensing requirement) attend.
We thank you and our room parents, in advance, for contributing to this special experience.
Menu: Turkey, mashed potatoes, cornbread with honey butter, corn and pumpkin pie

Symptoms which Require your Child to Stay at Home-
Your child's health is a matter of major importance. In order to prevent the spread of illness, we ask that you keep sick children at home with a fever of 100 degrees or higher:
Child may return to school 24 hours after the fever has subsided and temperature has returned to normal, allotting one full absentee school day.
Colds/Flu: Child may return to school when there is no thick yellow or green mucous discharge from the nose and coughing has subsided.
Diarrhea/Vomiting: Child may return to school 24 hours after loose stools and vomiting have subsided, allotting one full absentee school day.
Conjunctivitis: Child may return to school when eyes are no longer red, draining, or itching with a written doctor’s note.
Rash: Child may return to school when the rash disappears or when it is determined that the rash is not a result of a communicable disease as indicated by a written doctor’s note.
If the child becomes ill at home with a communicable illness, please telephone the school office (714.544.3132 x117) that day to inform us of the symptoms or diagnosed illness (for example: strep throat, chicken pox, ring worm, head lice, hand-foot-mouth or conjunctivitis). A written doctor's note is needed to return to school for any communicable illness.
Please make sure that your child is well enough to participate in program activities before returning to school after an illness.
