One Chip Challenge Warning
THE ONE CHIP CHALLENGE - Spicy and Dangerous
What is the One Chip Challenge?
The Paqui One Chip Challenge is a social media challenge promoted by Paqui, a tortilla chip company. Paqui sells small containers, each containing one spicy chip and the label “One Chip Challenge”. The challenge involves eating the single spicy tortilla chip, then waiting as long as possible before eating or drinking anything else. The Paqui website challenges people to wait as long as possible after chip consumption, characterizing those who can last a full hour without eating or drinking as “invincible” (people who eat or drink a minute after eating the chip are dismissed as being “powerless”). Participants in this challenge are also encouraged to post their reactions on social media.
Please see the attached video explaining what the one chip challenge is and its danger.
Dangers behind the One chip Challenge:
People who eat capsaicin-containing products, including tortilla chips featured in the Paqui One Chip Challenge, often experience mouth irritation, pain, or burning, along with intestinal discomfort. Capsaicin consumption can also cause more serious health problems, including chest pain, heart palpitations, and even heart attacks. Consumption of larger amounts of capsaicin can also cause repeated vomiting that can lead to life-threatening esophageal damage.
Support from Parents/Guardians:
Talk to your students about the possible dangers of such challenges. Have a conversation about peer pressure on social media and the influences to participate in such a challenge. It is also important to remind students that social media does not always share the negative side effects of the challenge.
Please be Advised:
Due to its popularity, local vendors such as 7-11 are selling these products to our students. We want to advise parents and students that this challenge is dangerous and for the student’s safety they are prohibited on our school campus. If a student is caught with these products or is participating in the One Chip Challenge on the school site, they will lose their upcoming dance privileges.
As always, thank you for your support,
Marsh Junior High School

Did you know that Marsh is an AVID School site?
What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an in-school academic support program for grades seven through twelve. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for college eligibility and success.
AVID Elective
The core component is the AVID Elective, which supports students as they tackle the most rigorous classes. For one period a day, AVID students learn: organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.
Furthermore, AVID students become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
AVID Schoolwide
The AVID instructional program focuses on methodologies that will help students prepare for - and participate in - a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. These methodologies are referred to as WICOR:
W - Writing. Students clarify and communicate their thoughts and understanding of material.
I - Inquiry. Students ask questions which allow them to clarify, analyze, and synthesize material.
C - Collaboration. Students challenge, help, and learn from one another.
O - Organization. Students learn how to organize, retrieve and maintain their materials and data.
R - Reading. Students analyze, question, critique, clarify, and comprehend material.
All of our Marsh Teachers have been trained in AVID WICOR instructional strategies and implement this methodology in the core class setting.
Take a moment to check out more about AVID on our Marsh Website.
