Ms. Kramr's 3rd Grade Newsletter

Feb. 1-5

What we are learning this week:

Reading- We will be looking at text structure and cause and effect. Students will be using cause and effect language to summarize non-fiction text

Writing- We are learning strategies on how to research. We will learn what plagiarism is, how to take notes while researching, and how to put information into our own words.

Math- Our next unit will explore the x9 multiplication strategies and we’ll spend time working on division problems. When working on division, the focus will be on connecting the multiplication strategy to the related division fact. Our DCA 10 & 11 test will be on Tuesday, Feb. 9th.

Science- We are starting a new unit on weather and the water cycle. Students will explore with different weather tools as well track the weather from Round Rock and one other city. Ask them what is a thermometer, wind vane, and rain gauge.

Social Studies-We are starting our unit learning about different cultures in the community. We will start by researching our own heritage, and compare/contrast that with other cultures in the community.

Homework: A homework sheet is going to be sent home with your child. Also, a paper doll will too. Students will talk to their parents about what their heritage is. (What country(ies) did your family come from?) We will begin researching in class on Tuesday. On Tuesday, they will be assigned to decorate their paper doll based on their heritage. Students can be as creative as they want. They can use real fabric, paper, etc. The doll will be due on Monday, Feb. 8th.

Parents,

The students have been bringing toys and other things from home. They are being sneaky with them and are getting their items picked up by me, which is a big deal! Students have been warned by me several times to just keep all their belongings at home. Our rule since the beginning of the year is, if I catch you playing or being sneaky with a toy/item I will take it away and put it in my June bag. After talking with other teachers, today during our class meeting we discussed that if you have an item in the bag that you really want back, your parent and you the student are going to need to schedule a conference with me to pick up the item. I want to be consistent with my rule. If the child does get their item back with the conference, then they were told it can never come back to school otherwise it will stay in the June bag until the last second of the last day of school.

Thanks,

Morgan

Valentine Parties in Third Grade

This year each third grade classroom will be holding an intimate and low-key breakfast to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Each class will have a sign-up for foods needed at their Valentine’s Breakfast.

Each child will need valentines for everyone in the classroom and a decorated box to hold his/her cards.

Since all parties across the school are being held on the same day, we ask that parents send in items with students but not attend the party this time.

We will have a GIANT end of year celebration so we are asking that you rest up and begin stretching for that event!!

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and help in making this party day fun but low-key.

Important Dates:

Feb. 3rd- Early Release

Feb. 12th- Valentine's Party

Feb. 8th- Spelling test
