Light Pollution ("Sky Glow")

How It All Began

Some of the cities with the worst pollution are located in China, India, and Russia. This is a byproduct of economic competition. Less developed countries, in order to compete with already industrialized countries, had built up their industry sector with little regard for pollution and its horrible effects. More factories and more production held long-term effects of lost lives and a contaminated environment.

  • The World Health Organization has determined that there are 7 million premature deaths every year due to air pollution
  • The National Academy of Sciences declared that ocean-based sources, such as cargo ships and cruise liners, dump 14 billion pounds of garbage into the ocean each year.
  • Because of water pollution, 1 person dies every 20 seconds from drinking unclean water.
  • 1800 people die every day from air pollution in China alone. The European Union only deems 1% of the air safe for those living in cities.
  • 1/7 of the world's population lacks clean water, leading to much sickness and many deaths.
  • An average American produces 4.3 pounds of waste each day
  • Hundreds of thousands of deaths are caused simply by noise in the atmosphere. Underwater noise pollution can also hurt innocent whales' navigational systems.
  • Over 3 million children under the age of 5 die every year because of adverse environmental conditions.
  • It takes 5 days for the jet-stream to take China's air pollution and bring it to the US.
