RECOGNIZING SCHOOL VIOLENCE AWARENESS WEEK
Cultivating a Respectful Community
The NJ State Department of Education requires that all school districts designate the week beginning with the third Monday in October of each year as School Violence Awareness Week. This week affords a great opportunity for each member of the school community to be active participants in the important work of violence prevention and school safety.
At Cedar Grove Elementary, we have established clear expectations for behavior, and celebrate what it means to be a Proud Patriot -- "Respectful, Curious and Productive."
In recognition of School Violence Awareness Week, we encourage all our students to participate each day in a series of week-long "Kindness Challenges." These challenges will be announced each morning and represent an engaging and fun way for students to connect, encourage and value their peers:
Monday: Spread Kindness Around Like Confetti
Students will use post-its to leave “kindness” messages or drawings (i.e., hearts, smiles, rainbows) all around Cedar Grove!
Tuesday: Growing Our Circle of Friends
Students will invite someone new to play on the playground.
Wednesday: Being Kind is Not Random
Students will find opportunities to do random acts of kindness and will list them on a poster (or anchor chart) outside their classroom.
Thursday: It Takes All Colors to Make a Rainbow
Students will wear rainbow colors to school and “fistbump” or “air high-five” students who wear matching colors.
Friday: Paying Kindness Forward
Classes will exchange “Kindness Bookmarks” that they created in art class over the week of Friday, October 16th through Thursday, October 21st. After the exchange, students will write “thank you’s” to the class they exchanged with.

PERSONAL POSSESSIONS -- Important to Note!
We Need Your Help!
TRADING CARDS, ELECTRONIC GAMES, IPADS, SMART WATCHES AND CELL PHONES often interfere with the school’s ability to educate, and they are not permitted out while on school grounds unless approved by the classroom teacher (i.e., "Game day earned by students").
NO STUDENT SHOULD EVER TAKE A DIGITAL OR VIDEO RECORDING OF ANOTHER STUDENT.
Lastly, we are having some intermittent issues on our school buses. Please review with your child/ren CGE Expectations for a Safe Ride on the Bus. Hard copies will come home to all parents to review, sign and return to school. We need everyone's support to ensure that our students enjoy a safe and comfortable ride to and from school (or on school trips.)
We thank you for your support!
