Reading
This week in reading we wrote about reading for our new story Life on Ice. We had to write a story about being a scientist in Antarctica. We had to have a problem and include information from Life on Ice. In Life on Ice it tells about what it’s like to be a scientist in Antarctica. It tells what is good and what is bad it says to stay at normal heat because sweat can turn into ice and make you freeze!! Something else that is bad is that you can’t bring any metal objects because they will freeze to you. Yes, that means no phones! A good thing that comes from visiting the Arctic is it is a perfect place to see the sky because it is so clear. Another good thing in Antartica is that it is excellent if you search for meteorites because you can easily find black on white. Our stories turned out great.
We also continued reading a story called Dogzilla. It is by Dav Pilkey. It is about well...a dog. Dogzilla is a huge prehistoric puppy who can cause a good amount of chaos in Mousopolis. The mice in Mousopolis are having a cook off and dogzilla smells it. He comes out of the volcano and destroys Mousopolis. The mice thing about what dogs don’t like so they use a bath to make Dogzilla never come back.
Science
This week in school for science we did many things. Including studying the earth and the sun. We also made astronauts last week. First, we studied the Earth and sun. Here are some interesting facts about the earth and sun. Did you know the inside of the Earth is hotter than the surface of the sun? The center of the earth is actually metal and there is a magnetic field that draws objects towards the earth. Earth is 93 million miles away from the Sun. We learned that the earth both rotates on an axis and revolves around the sun. Did you know that the seasons are caused by tilt of Earth towards or away from the sun? Another thing we did in science is make really cool astronauts. These astronauts we will put badges from each planet we learn about. So far we have badges from Earth and the Sun. We are excited to learn about the moon next week.
Writing
This week in writing we published and recorded our persuasive speeches which you probably saw at open house. We first practiced reading our speech and then had a classmate record us actually saying our speech. When we were done with our speeches, we wrote stories on a website called Scholastic Story Starters. You first chose a genre and the spin the wheel to create your story starter. The wheel selects a character, setting, and plot for you. It was really fun. My story was about a unicorn named Sparkles.
Math
We did some really exciting things this week! One of them was a project called Fraction Portraits. It was so fun. Lucas’s area was 70 and Sophie’s area was 134. Now, you might be thinking, “What?”. Don’t worry we will explain. First, we used paper squares to make self portraits. Then, we counted the squares for our total area. Lastly, we made fractions for the different colors of squares. For example, if 200 squares total and 30 are tan you add them to make the fraction of 30/200. Another thing that we did in math was learn box multiplication (or the break apart strategy). Here is a example: 4 x 66 = ? Look at the picture. First we put 4 on the side and 66 on the top. Then we broke 66 into 60 and 6.then we did 4 x 60 = 240, and 4 x6=24. Then we added 240 and 24 to get 264. Thanks for reading! Have a good day!
