CHS Literacy Update

Literacy Transcending Disciplines

Welcome to the March Issue!

This month, our focus is Technology! Just in time for spring - ideas for waking up and engaging minds that may need some thawing. The possibilities are endless when it comes to reading, writing, speaking, and listening using technology.

Check out the cool ways your CHS colleagues are using technology in their classrooms. And don't forget - Teen Tech Week is March 8-14!

If all else fails, or you're in the mood for a little humor, check out 10 Ways to Fake a 21st Century Classroom.

Writing Wednesdays at CHS!

Anna Cantwell (see bio & contact info below), is now an APPLES service-learning intern with CoachWrite, and she will be developing various writing support initiatives in partnership with Stuart Phillips and Anna O'Connell.

Anna is coaching in two classes with Patricia Albornoz and will also be mentoring newly placed CoachWrite volunteers. She is offering writing conference appointments during SMART Lunch on Wednesdays, and occasional other conferences in the morning. Anna will also be leading SMART lunch mini-lessons for small groups of students (by sign up!) on a wide range of issues related to the writing process and college readiness in academic writing.

During 6th period on Wednesdays, Daily Tar Heel columnist Ishmael Bishop will be working with students by appointment in the media center (please sign up at desk)-- or teachers can request in-classroom coaching for a writing project in any subject area.

For major in-class writing requests (2-4 coaches at a time), please continue to send inquiries to Stuart Phillips (

Anna Cantwell, CHS CoachWrite Intern

Anna Cantwell is a senior English major at UNC, with minors in Creative Writing and Education. She has been volunteering in the CHCCS system since her first year at UNC, and spent the last two and a half years at CHS with CoachWrite. She has worked in every grade, but her first placement was in Mackensie Malkemes' senior English class, where she first recognized her passion for education and equity, and how vital writing skills are for high schoolers. Anna still keeps in touch with several of those students today. Now, she's fortunate to be able to work 10-15 hours every week with CoachWrite. She hopes to empower students through all kinds of writing, and is looking forward to the rest of the semester!

CHS M-TAC Presents at NCTIES 2015

Our very own CHS Media and Technology Advisory Committee (MTAC) led a breakout session at the 2015 NCTIES Conference in Raleigh! This year's theme was "Make it Personal."

Drew Jester, Daphne Montoya, Candacie Schrader, Christoph Stutts, and Kara Watson presented It's a HIT - Homegrown Integration of Technology!, a panel session on how they integrate technology into their instruction. Go Jags!

TIP: The MTAC members attended conference sessions as well and have TONS of new ideas about how to incorporate technology into their teaching and planning. If you see them around, ask them what they learned!

iMacs Available!

In case you haven't seen, we have 4 beautiful iMacs available for student use in the front of the Media Center. Wireless keyboards and mice can be checked out from the circulation desk. These are great tools for student multimedia productions.
