Yousuf Karsh
"The Roaring Lion"
Background History
Kersh recalled that he was nervous while photographing Churchill, because he only had five minutes to get a good picture. Yousuf Kersh was able to capture this picture by taking Churchill's cigar without permission. This picture was taken in a studio that Yousuf had set up the night before. Later, Churchill complemented Kersh on how he was able to "even make a roaring lion stand still to be photographed." Thus resulting in the title "Roaring Lion".
What can we learn from this photograph
In this shot I feel like Kersh took and created the shot. When he took Churchill's cigar, he was creating the shot, but when he got the reaction, he was taking the shot. We can learn that the photographer has to take charge at some point, because if Kersh hadn't taken his cigar away, he wouldn't'e gotten this famous picture.
My Opinion
I like this portrait because I know the story behind it. At first it wasn't my favorite. Since it has such a unique background to it, I think it makes it standout from other portraits, you just have to know what went into it. I think Yousuf Kersh captured Churchill's personality well, but there is also another picture he got of Churchill smiling.
