Week of 2/5/18 - 2/9/18
Letter from Principal Nelson
Cougar Nation-
This week Small Middle School is honored to host a delegation of teachers and administrators from Taiwan in an effort to share best practices and learn more about each other’s culture. On Wednesday we will welcome our guests with open arms as these educators go on learning walks and receive information about our flagship programming and the American education system in general. Our hope is they leave Smallville witnessing evidence of our fundamental belief that happy kids make for better students. It’s not rocket science, it’s a rather simple formula and we’re proud to share; kids that enjoy where they work, and who they work for perform better.
Choice Sheets: This newsletter is chopped full of helpful hints and tricks to help you navigate next year’s choice sheets with your student. By now, we’ve had our awesome counselors visit your students’ social studies class to teach them how to fill it out correctly. However, we know that with the amount of classes we offer, and the with our specialized programming, it never hurts to educate guardians as well. We hope you find the provided links, descriptions and examples beneficial.
PALS: What a treat it was for me be able to walk over Patton Elementary on Friday with our 8th grade PALS class. For those of you who aren’t aware of PALS, it’s our student leadership class that not only does things to improve the culture here in Smallville, but also works with Patton as mentors and buddies during their lunch hour and library time. I can’t tell you how proud it made me to see our 8th graders sit down and connect with our future Cougars as they helped open juice boxes, refill ketchup (or catsup) ramekins, walk kids to the bathroom, answer questions about middle school, and even read to each other. Trust me when I tell you this, these kids are perfect examples of what we wish for all of our students to aspire to be: polite, positive, and perfect role models.
Thanks again for reading. Let us know how we’re doing via the link below or feel free to give us an email, call, or visit.

Academic UIL - STUDENT CONTESTANTS
Academic UIL season is starting and it’s time to get involved.
The University Interscholastic League offers 17 Academic contests for grades 6-8. These activities, which exist to complement the academic curriculum, are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills.
Students interested in competing in the 2018 Academic UIL tournament need to sign up. Students must have passing grades, good attendance and no discipline issues in order to compete. CSMS staff and/or parent will coach all interested students and will set up meeting times. More specific information will come from the coaches or UIL Academic Coordinator. If your child is interested in trying out for a UIL Academic Meet Event, please complete the following Goggle form.
Practices will start the week of Feb 5. (Day and time @ coaches’ discretion)
Contest date is Saturday April 14 @ Marble Falls Middle School (bus provided)
