A Message from Dr. Bearden
There was a lot going on at SHE during the past week and a bunch of great things coming up! Don't forget to visit our SHE Media Center website to view any of the morning announcements from this year! These are uploaded as soon as the SHE morning newscast concludes and is a great way for you to get daily info about SHE.
BUS Update for SHE Families: As much as we encourage all families to utilize the buses in am/pm rides to school, we also understand and empathize with the frustration, which accompanies some shortage in full-time, permanent bus drivers. Thank you to families on Grey Shark, Pink Pig, Blue Dog, and Green Frog as your buses have been particularly impacted for the longest amount of time from the beginning of the year to present. Leslie Hannan, supervisor, and Sam Ham, transportation director, have kept Dr. Bearden as up to date as possible on bus information and are even driving SHE buses, at times, to ensure that our students are impacted as little as possible.
FYI: Recently the FCS Board of Education voted unanimously to raise the hourly rate for bus drivers to $20 and on October 26th, FCS transportation held a job fair! Additional drivers were hired at the event and are being trained at present. We hope to have permanent drivers in place for all of our buses in the very near future!! Parents, thank you for continuing to reinforce to students the importance of bus safety at all times while on the bus.
Also, Grey Shark (as well as some of our other buses) is very crowded and it is difficult to accommodate additional riders. Please only request afternoon transportation changes for childcare, emergency, etc. In addition, do try to arrange alternative transportation utilizing carpool as much as possible. When your child will have a change in his/her transportation, please send a note to his/her teacher with details including both students and both parents' name and contact information. We would also need the carpool number of the parent, who is taking your child home. Our priority is student safety; therefore, please try to understand and always show your ID willingly (and patiently) when asked to do so by a staff member. :-)
IOWA IMPACT TO TAG EVALUATION: Earlier this month, the decision was made to cancel IOWA testing. This decision does impact TAG testing as IOWA is used for the Achievement component. The decision has been made for TAG teachers to administer Stanford 10s to all 3rd and 5th grade students who do NOT have current, qualifying achievement scores and are currently being tested. This will impact twelve 3rd graders and fifteen 5th graders, who are currently being tested.
Testing materials have been ordered and we hope to begin as soon as they arrive. With these changes, there will be a slight delay sending eligibility reports. Our goal is to have testing complete before Thanksgiving and eligibility letters out mid-December.
We appreciate your patience as testing continues. Please reach out to TAG Dept. Chair, Linda Herrington (HerringtonL@fultonschools.org), with any questions or concerns regarding testing.
#BeKindToEveryone Banner Campaign: www.bekindtoeveryone.com SHE was chosen as the first school in Fulton County to host a 10 X 6 foot "Be the I in K__ND" banner. There are 11 banners total. the banner is currently hanging in the rotunda outside the cafe. We want to encourage anyone visiting SHE cafeteria to take the time to get a picture made as the "I" in K__ND and then post on your social media accounts tagging #bekindtoeveryone! On Thursday, November 14th, I will take the banner to another school in FCS and they will keep it for a week, with the same process! We are hoping that the banner circulates through as many schools as possible this school year!! I encourage you to also visit www.bekindtoeveryone.com or visit Jordyn's Summer Shirt Project on Facebook to read about an incredible young girl named Jordyn and her BeKindToEveryone movement that has swept social media. Kindness is free and it Matters!!
SHE Annual Book Character Parade: WOW!! It's one of my favorite events and I could not be more happy with this year's Book Character Parade! Staff, students, and parents turned out in a big way for this event. Thank you to Cambridge HS Band members and Milton HS cheerleaders, who volunteered their time to make the parade feel even more like a parade for our Huskies! The children's costumes were amazing and we will award 1 student in each grade level the award for Most Creative Costume (as voted by teachers). The staff also won awards for Most Creative Costume and Best Overall costumes. I will announce the winners next week.Thank you to all who came out and lined the sidewalk for our parade. Special thanks to our special guests: Dr. Mike Looney, Superintendent; Ms. Kibbey Crumbley, Area Superintendent, and Katie Reeves, Board Member.
DRUMMING IN THE DARK: Ms. Goldfuss and the 5th graders really put on a GREAT concert following the Book Character Parade! There was an abundance of families present and the concert did not disappoint! Lights off and entertainment on with great music choice, light up drumsticks, and choreagraphed drumming by 5th graders! The "Drumming In The Dark" concert was definitely a highlight for our 5th graders year in this year full of memories culminating with our celebration week as they transition to 6th grade at Hopewell or Northwestern Middle Schools in 2010-21.
Principal Chat on November 12th at 9 am. Topics: Digital Citizenship for Families and CCRPI Update:
On November 12th at 9 am in the Media Center. Dr. Bearden's special guest this month is Melisa Eichele, our METI. Ms. Eichele manages our Media Center and as well leads in the area of instructional technology. She will present a workshop for families on "Digital Citizenship at Home". As a society, we are becoming more dependent on the Internet for information, research, shopping, social media, etc. The Internet is a huge digital "space" and there is content available, which may not be appropriate for all. Ms. Eichele delivers our Digital Citizenship trainings for staff and students as well. During this seminar, Ms. Eichele will share the FCS Digital Citizenship training with parents, which we hope will help to reinforce the importance of digital citizenship at school and home. You don't want to miss this one.
CCRPI Score: On October 25th, the Georgia Department of Education released the 2019 College and Career Ready Progress Index (CCRPI) score for each school. Summit Hill ES earned a 82.0 and 5 star climate rating. Immediately after Ms. Eichele's Digital Citizenship seminar, Dr. Bearden will to hear the break down of the score, see the disaggrated data, and hear about next steps for SHE in alignment with the four pillars of the strategic plan and our Leader in Me culture.
As usual, Dr. Bearden will hold a question and answer session with any parents. After the Principal Chat, guests are welcome to walk our halls, visit our playground area, and/or cafeteria for the next 10-15 minutes to tour the school. Staff and students will be involved in school routine and we ask that guests do not enter classrooms and/or distract students during instructional activities.
SHE School Governance Council Meeting on November 12th at 2:45 in the PTO Room: The SHE SGC is comprised of teachers, parents, and community members. The SGC works collaboratively with Dr. Bearden managing and making decisions, which are best for our students. The agenda is posted on the SHE front door and all invested in SHE are welcome to attend the meeting. SGC AGENDA HERE
November Spotlight: Recognition of Unit ed States Military: Each month, our special areas teachers spotlight a national awareness. November's awareness is for our Veterans and Active Duty Military. As a part of the spotlight, we have two activities planned.
On November 11th, we will have a patriotic themed dress up day and we would like to also recognize any members of the military in our SHE community. If you or a family member serve(d) in the military, please consider sending in a picture of that person. The veteran or active duty military member could be pictured in uniform or plain clothes.
Due to presentation space, please keep the photo size to 5”x 7” or smaller and include his/her name, military branch, and highest rank. All pictures can be sent to SHE: to Mr. Simonton and/or digital copies emailed to simonton@fultonschools.org. Thank you in advance and, if you would like the picture returned, please include your student’s name and homeroom teacher on the back.
#SHEShares October: "The Bert Show Big Thank You": Along with the spotlight on our Armed Forces, many of our classes are participated in Q100s: The Bert Show's Big Thank You. This event calls for handwritten thank you letters to members of our military, who are deployed overseas. As a part of SHE's writing curriculum and the November spotlight on the Military, our #SHEShares for October was to collect the "Thank You" letters written by our students, which will be delivered to the Bert Show by PTO volunteers. Our students wrote hundreds of letters and we were so proud! What a great #SHEShares
#SHEShares November: Nonperishable Food Drive for North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC): Students in all 3 Houses are encouraged to bring in nonperishable food items. The NFCC, located on Elkins Road in Roswell, is a member of our community and provides a great deal of needed to support for many of the families in the Roswell, Alpharetta, and Milton Communities! Each year, we participate in their nonperishable food drive as they prepare for the Holidays. If your family is also passionate about community service, I would encourage you to call NFCC and volunteer as a family. There are always jobs available such as: Food Pantry organization, Thrift Shop organization, and Donation organization. Once you make your appointment, there is a quick orientation with NFCC staff, and then an hour (or more) of much needed help to clean, sort, organize, hang, help, etc. Our staff volunteers each year and I hope that your family can spare a few nonperishable items (or time at NFCC) to help out with their busiest season of each year! (more information)
That is it for this week! As always, thank you for reading and for your partnership! Please reach out if you have any questions or anything to share. Take care, Lorrie

NEW INFORMATION for This Week's Hilltop Happenings
Morning Routine Changing for SHE beginning Thursday, November 7th
Coming Soon-Additional Student Activities Added to Mornings: Families, we are always looking to add new ways in which to support students academically, emotionally, and/or socially. Currently, from 7:10 until 7:40, students only have the option to go to their homeroom teacher or visit the media center. In PK, K, & 1st grade, the time in the morning is used by teachers for establishing routines and to support small groups academically. For now, this morning routine will not change and these youngest students will maintain going to their classroom each morning. PK thru 1st will still have the option to eat breakfast each morning.
However, in grades 2 thru 5, fewer students need the practice of routines and/or small group supports. Also, 2nd thru 5th grade teachers would prefer a quiet environment to support small group learning and/or study sessions. Sustained quiet can be a challenge with 20+ students coming to the classroom each morning.
Therefore, to allow 2nd thru 5th teachers and students more flexibility, beginning Thursday, November 7th, we are going to add three additional activities for supporting students from 7:10- 7:25. All activity areas will be supervised and there may be additional activities for some students, such as Summit, Student Council, Peer Readers, etc. (communicated as relevant). At 7:30, students will all report to their homeroom classrooms to put their things away, view morning announcements, and participate in their morning meetings prior to academics beginning at 8 am.
Additional Morning Activities for Grades 2nd thru 5th:
Cafeteria: In the cafeteria, students can eat breakfast; visit and talk with their grade level friends; or sit on the stage to quietly read, do homework with adult support, or work in pairs to study; The larger space easily allows for more social-type interactions and conversations to occur.
Classrooms: If a student needs extra support academically, his/her teacher will write a pass for him/her to come to classroom;
Media Center: The media center is still open for students to visit, select books, read, use technology, or play in the maker spaces;
Computer Lab: Additionally, an adult will provide supervision in the computer lab for students. There are a variety of technology-supported learning opportunities for students: iRead, iReady, make-up assessments, recovery opportunities, keyboard and word processing practice, etc. (the computer lab will be on a first come basis as space is limited)
Advanced Strategies Lab: Ms. Leeson will open the ASL classroom in the morning for students, who need a quieter place to study, do homework, or work on ALS projects. (the ASL will be on a first come basis as space is limited)
We will provide further clarity in communication of the new morning routines for students and families during the last two weeks of October. I just wanted to give you all a heads up so that you can answer any questions about the new morning activities for your child(ren) as their teachers may begin talking with them about the new activities, which will begin Thursday, November 7th.

Family Carpool Numbers: Please Display Your CP Number Clearly for Staff in the Afternoon
Car Pool (in the morning and during dismissal) is running smoothly for the most part. Please be sure that you are staying aware of the following:
- Your car slows down significantly as you approach and leave the car pool areas
- Your child only enters/exits your vehicle on the school side curb, where staff can assist
- At arrival, please wait until your child, including his/her belongings, has completely exited your car and the door is closed before pulling away from the curb
- At dismissal each day, please display your carpool number where our staff can clearly see it from several cars away. We suggest mounting to the backside of the passenger's side visor (flip down during carpool) or hanging it from your rear view mirror (a small hanger with clip works great). This helps us to get students quickly to the correct loading area.
- Bring your fur friend along on Waggin' Wednesday! We have doggie treats for all of our SHE fur friends!
If you would like more information on our Leader in Me culture at SHES, click this button. There are also resources for parents on this website.
This link will open information regarding bus and carpool information.
IF THE STAGE HAS TO BE CLOSED: LUNCH DATES ARE UNAVAILABLE ON THESE DAYS
There are several times during the year when the stage must be closed for a variety of reasons. When the stage is closed, lunch dates are unavailable. For instance, on Friday, October 4th, our stage will be closed due to setting up the cake walk area for the carnival. Later in October, we will administer the Iowa Tests to the 3rd and 5th graders. During a state testing window and due to testing security, only Fulton County employees are allowed to be in the building. Parents and visitors may visit the front office areas only. We will do our best to give you as much notice as possible, when the stage has to be closed and/or parents are allowed in the front areas only. If your child's birthday falls on one of the days, when the stage is closed, please consider having a lunch date on a different day. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
We will always list days, when the stage is closed, is the calendar at the beginning of this newsletter. 2019-20 Lunch Schedules by Homeroom Teacher
