Weekly Update ~ March 14, 2016

Curriculum Corner

We emailed information last Tuesday about the BOE-approved laptop take-home program for students in grades 6-8. This information was also posted on the website, and we provided handouts during conferences.

If you’d like to participate, we ask that you fill out our 2-question survey by Wednesday of this week. This will allow us time to order necessary materials before Spring Break.

Information about the laptop take-home program can be found at the links below:

You Be the Chemist Challenge

Congratulations to 8th grader Nathan John, 7th grader Desi Nainar, and 6th graders Brandon LaCrosse and Nikhil Patel on their performance at the Regional You Be the Chemist Challenge. All four made it into the top ten. Brandon LaCrosse made it all the way to the semifinals, and Nikhil Patel made it to the final round. In the end, after twelve playoff questions, Nikhil took second place and earned a spot at the state competition in Romeoville.

March Book Madness

March Book Madness is going on in the Junior High Learning Center!

We started with the top 16 books checked out to name our Sweet 16. 4th-8th grade students voted for their favorite books last week to determine the Elite 8. This week's voting will decide the Final 4. Students are encouraged to discuss the books and vote during homeroom and study hall. The Champion will be named on Friday, April 1.

4th & 5th Grade Drama Club

Registration for the 4th and 5th grade Drama Club will be this week. The club will meet on Tuesdays, starting on March 29th from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM in the drama room. Information sheets and permission slips can be found outside the drama room and in the virtual backpack. The registration deadline is Friday, March 18th so Mrs. Ludington can plan over spring break.

SEL News

This week in Kindergarten through 5th grade we are continuing to build strategies for dealing with stressful situations in and out of school! Our 4th and 5th graders helped us last week by creating videos for our younger students. As we learn the new songs that reinforce our skills, we will be singing along to Oak Grove's amazing role models! Thank you 4th & 5th grade! Enjoy a couple of our videos. A special thank you to Dr. Meltzer for helping us use the Production Room for our first time. The students had fun and loved the professional look of their video!

Extended Day Program Field Trip

The Oak Grove Extended Day Program went to Peoples Choice Family Fun Center in Waukegan on March 10th and had a BLAST! They played glow in the dark miniature golf, had a pizza lunch, enjoyed a movie with free popcorn and slushies and played video games for prizes. The manager told our director that Oak Grove was one of the best behaved groups he has ever seen! We are very proud of them and were told that they are welcome back any time!

This $1000 scholarship is open to graduating Libertyville High School Seniors who are Oak Grove Alumni. A special thank you to Principal Fenton for lacing up with a smile! A huge high five to Heather Moller, Renee Muehling & Katie Griffith for all your help on & off the ice!
