Music Notes
Welcome to the music room! We are back in the music room ( Mr. Sargent's former room). It is beautiful and spacious. I am SO grateful and blessed to be where I started teaching at Alto 36 years ago.
ALL our classes have been playing and developing the habit of singing, continuing to participate in our activities, and use our thinking skills to develop musically.
Grades K-2 - We have been singing seasonal songs - "Love Grows", "Mail Myself to You", and everyone's favorite - "I Wrote A Letter".
Kindergarten has been introduced to the Russian musical fairy tale, "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev.
Grades 1-2 - These children have been listening and differentiating the sounds of the instruments in the story "Peter and the Wolf.
Second Grades have been identifying the instrument families as well.
The children are learning the musical language of SOLFEGE (do re mi fa sol la ti do). You can see Mrs. Greer's class singing, "We Are Playing in the Forest" and using the do mi and sol
arm signals for those pitches in the melody.
Grades 3 -4 - The children have been playing and singing many songs. "Bluebird, Bluebird" has been one song we have played and made a music map. Music maps are one step towards music literacy. We make a free-flowing map and follow it and follow our classmates maps.
We also identified the rhythm chunk of "ti ti" in the song and wrote the notes on our maps.
Here are a few maps the children made.
Grade 5 - The children are continuing to sing and play more interactive song experiences. Currently, we are IDEOGRAPHING the rhythm of Scotland's Burning. We are writing the rhythm and them
changing the rhythm around using "ti ti's" and ta's. We will also dictate and write the musical notation of an old favorite song, "I Wrote A Letter" and write the words underneath the music notes.
As always it is a JOY to teach your children to experience and love music.
"Sing"cerely,
Mrs. Gumina
Music Teacher
