Charleroi School District Honor Student Marissa Filby
Marissa Filby, a junior at Charleroi Area High School of Charleroi is a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, MA on June 25-27, 2017.
The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.
Marissa Filby was nominated by Dr. Robert Darling, the Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent Charleroi School District based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
During the three-day Congress, Marissa Filby will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cutting edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology.
Keynote Presentation - Embracing Challenge
Eric McElvenny, a former Belle Vernon graduate, will be presenting to our Middle and High School Students on Thursday, February 9th beginning at 7:45 am.
Eric was a U.S. Marines captain in Afghanistan when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in late 2011. After surgeons amputated most of his lower right leg, McElvenny received an email from his commanding officer who wanted to know when he'd be running his first marathon. McElvenny decided to take that motivational suggestion even further by competing in triathlons, including several at the Ironman level. Those consist of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a marathon (26.2 miles).
Our students will have the opportunity to join Eric as he explores the characteristics, traits and actions he found most useful in his journey from the hospital bed to the Ironman World Championships finish line. During this presentation, Eric will give our students his tools and techniques to overcoming life's obstacles through powerful, funny and emotional stories.
Eric’s website is attached in the above link.
