TRMS 8th Grade Last Blast!!!
Thursday May 26th 12noon-4pm
We have an incredibly FUN last day event for our rising 9th graders! We will be providing a Chick-fil-A lunch (peanut allergy and vegetarian meals provided), a DJ, plenty of large fun inflatables, and raffling off prizes too!! We need YOUR help to make this a huge success! Please sign up to volunteer and donate where you can. You can leave items at the TRMS front desk any time between NOW and the event, but they must be at TRMS no later than Tuesday May 24th.
We are looking to borrow 5 corn-hole games for this event! If you have one, we will take good care of it! We also need cases of water (24 bottles), assorted boxes (50 small bags) of chips, store bought cookies (24 pack), donations for prizes ($5 or less), gift card prizes ($5 or less) volunteers to set-up, volunteers to serve lunch, work the inflatables, and last but not least ~ a clean-up crew… This is your last chance to volunteer at TRMS for your 8th graders, and we can use LOTS OF HELP! Let’s make this a great event for the last day in middle school :)
Please click on the Sign Up button to volunteer to help out or to donate items for the party. Thanks so much for your help!!!

Close Up Washington DC
Taylor Road students dominated at Close Up’s civic education program in Washington, DC last week! Twenty-seven students and three teachers attended the 4 day event, which was open to all middle school students. Participants enjoyed their visit to the White House, Capital Hill, several memorials, and museums, along with group activities including Mock Congress. Information will be sent out early next year for those that would like to join us on our 2017 trip!
Medication Pick-Up
This is a friendly reminder to stop by the clinic before the end of the school year to pick up any medications that you have left in the clinic for your child. Pick-up hours are between 8:30-4:00 on regular school days. Any medications left in the clinic after May 26th will be discarded. Thank you! Have a safe and healthy summer!
Orchestra Students Skype with Kenya
On Thursday, May 12 at 9:30am (4:30pm, Kenya), the students in the Taylor Road Middle School Orchestra, under the direction of Nicole Thompson, had the unique opportunity to Skype with the students in the new orchestra program at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret, Kenya, helped by their music teacher Charity Omulando. This session was a cooperative effort with former TRMS student, Danny Bermel, who is now working on his doctorate degree in music education at the University of Georgia.
We started the Skype session with our students here at TRMS showing the girls in Kenya how to move the pegs in order to tune their instruments. It was very interesting to watch TRMS students teach the girls how to tune their instruments from 16,000 miles away. They can’t touch the instruments through the computer, so everything had to be explained using only words and video. TRMS Violist, Jaemin Cho, began by explaining which way to turn the fine tuners to adjust pitch and Daniel Lee explained how to turn the pegs on the cello. The girls in Eldoret attempted to tune their instruments based on what they were learning. Students at TRMS also played two selections, entitled “Clocks” and “Dark Horse”, for the girls. In between the pieces, the girls in Kenya had the chance to play their new tune “Bile ’em Cabbage Down” and receive feedback on their playing from the students at TRMS. At the end of the session the students at TRMS were able to exchange questions back and forth with the girls in Eldoret. Our students were surprised to find out that the average school day in Eldoret is 18 hours long, and the girls in Moi Girls School were so impressed with how well our students played. Just before we said goodbye, the girls sang a beautiful song about love. The two groups of students plan to “see” and learn from each other again on May 19.

Summer Reading List
6th Grade World Market Day was a great success!
As a culmination of their studies of Europe, Canada, Latin America, and Australia, 6th grade social studies classes celebrated a World Market Day on May 18th. Each student chose one country and made a craft item representing that country to sell on Market Day. Through this project, students learned about the economic principles of owning and operating their own business including: how to set up a business, obtain a business license, market their product, and calculate inventory costs, net profit, and net loss. There were many great products for students and staff to shop from!
